Y
OU probably don't need an
excuse to get you into the
garden during the
glorious days of summer.
But in case you do, here are some
top tips on making your garden
shine during the summer months:
Plants need good soil to thrive.
Before planting, loosen and
enrich your flowerbeds by
improving the soil with rich well-
composted organic material, aged
manure, or use organic mulch,
both of which will retain
moisture and keep the roots cool.
Give your lawn regular feedings
and have a watering schedule. It's
better to deep water a few times,
than to give frequent sprinklings.
Choose plants that are meant to
survive in your area's climate.
The correct plants ensure a
beautiful garden, year after year,
and make upkeep so much easier.
Go greener with earth friendly
items, such as bio-degradable pest
repellants, planting disease
resistant roses that don't require
spraying, and using drip watering
kits for home use that minimise
water waste.
Vegetable gardening means you
can have plants and eat them too,
if you are clever about what you
plant in your garden.
Plant a salad bowl by planting
quick growing salad greens.
Many salad greens are available
as seeds, or as transplants to
grow at home.
Salad greens are very easy to
grow and can be planted just
about anywhere you can find a
spot, whether it's an actual
vegetable garden place, or a half
barrel just outside your kitchen
door.
Specialty greens such as
butterhead lettuces, arugula and
radicchio have lots of flavour and
texture, making your salads more
appetising.
Look for mixtures in seed
packets and sow the mixture
several times in the summer for a
continuing supply of greens.
In a small tiny garden, plants
should offer at least two
interesting features, which could
include a long flowering season,
such as most roses have, or good
autumn colour, an edible crop or
flowers for indoor arrangements.
For an illusion of greater size,
divide the garden into smaller
spaces, or if it's impossible
because it's just too small,
provide several distinct focal
points that trick the eye into
seeing more space than is really
there.
Choose perennials with extra
long seasons of bloom.
Don't forget to plant several
rose bushes in between your
perennials for extra long color
and beauty.
Most long bloomers are solar
powered. They need a spot with at
least six hours of sun daily, to
keep them flowering.
