FRESH developments at Houghton Hall in
recent years have seen the installation of
contemporary sculptures, together with the
staging of the Houghton International
Horse Trials.
The Subaru Houghton International Horse
Trials will take place from Thursday, May 21, to
Sunday, May 24. As well as the chance to see
some of the top eventers taking part in this
comparatively new horse trials venue, there will
be trade stands, and other entertainment which
will make this an action Day Out for the family.
The Houghton Hall Game and Country Fair
will be held on Saturday and Sunday, June 13-
14.
PALLADIAN GRANDEUR
Situated between King's Lynn and Fakenham,
Houghton Hall was built by Britain's first Prime
Minister, Sir Robert
Walpole, between
1722-35.
One of the grandest
surviving Palladian
houses in England, it
is a magnificent show-
case for the finest
architects, craftsmen
and painters of an ele-
gant age.
The work of archi-
tects James Gibbs
and Colen Campbell
was complemented by
the superb interiors of
William Kent and opu-
lently furnished to
reflect Walpole's sta-
tus.
Now lovingly
restored to its former
grandeur by the 7th
Marquess of
Cholmondeley,
Houghton retains
many of its original
furnishings, allowing
visitors the opportuni-
ty to step back in time
and enjoy Houghton
much as it may have
been in Walpole's day.
RESTORED
A great deal has
been happening at
Houghton over the
last few years. An
extensive programme
of repair and restora-
tion in the house has
continued, and the
much acclaimed five-
acre walled garden
has been beautifully
restored.
It includes 21 gar-
dens within the garden and provides colour and
interest throughout the year -- it's virtually an
attraction in its own right, so make sure you
allow enough time to explore it fully and discov-
er its many enchanting features.
The Houghton gardens received a Garden of
the Year Award from Christies and the Historic
Houses Association. A long-vanished ha-ha has
been put back on the west side of the house.
As well as the house, with its sumptuous fur-
nishings and paintings, visitors can see the
unique collection of model soldiers built up by
the late 6th Marquess. The Cholmondeley
Soldier Museum features more than 20,000
model soldiers and is one of the most important
in the world, including spectacular Napoleonic
battle scenes.
The 450 acre deer park close to the hall is
home to more than 600 white fallow deer and
smaller groups of exotic deer. You can wander
at leisure through the rolling parkland.
Various musical events will be taking place
throughout the summer, including Houghton
By Candlelight on Sunday, August 16.
