Cool pupils
`chill' with
lotto grant
PUPILS are making no big secret of their
plans to launch a series of relaxation work-
shops.
Glade Primary School, Atherton Road,
Clayhall, is celebrating a donation of 4,190
from Big Lottery's Secret Millionaire fund.
The charity has teamed up with Channel 4
TV show The Secret Millionaire to split
1million between groups that will benefit
the community.
Glade Primary plans to spend its grant on
a series of workshops for parents and chil-
dren with social and emotional needs.
As well as self-esteem and confidence
boosting tips, the sessions will teach families
about ways to deal with problems, cope with
stress, manage anger and communicate.
Headteacher Jas Leverton said: "This
grant from the Secret Millionaire Fund will
enable us to run Healing Feeling relaxation
workshops for both children and parents.
"A situation we are seeing more and more
is that young families are experiencing stress
and don't have time to relax.
"By working with them, we hope to give
them a strategy and exercises they can use to
relax together."
Debbie Pippard, of Big Lottery Fund
London, said: "This project will give young
families the opportunity to relax and spend
time together in a neutral environment.
"It is a great example of how a relatively
small amount of money can really make a
difference."
People can nominate good causes to bene-
fit from funding, and can get involved by vis-
iting www.channel4.com/secretmillionaire.
Half-marathon joy
for blind runner
A BLIND runner has
raised 1,700 for charity
after completing a 13-
mile half-marathon.
Roger Brownlow, 34, ran
through four of the capital's most
famous green spaces, despite
only being able to see light and
dark in one eye and having field
of vision issues in the other.
He completed the 13.1-mile
Royal Parks half-marathon in just
three hours.
The money he raised in sponsor-
ship has now been handed over to
the learning disability charity
Mencap.
Roger, who lives in Sahara House
care home in Cranbrook Road,
Gants Hill, said: "I was very happy
to finish the race, but I was very
tired at the end.
"I would like to say a big thank
you to the readers of the Recorder
who sponsored me."
Roger is registered blind and has
had a learning disability since he
was born, when his head was
crushed during delivery and he suf-
fered a heart attack, resulting in
severe damage to his optic nerve.
The run earlier this month was his
first major challenge after being
released from Mile End Mental
Health Unit two years ago after
being taken ill and falling into a
catatonic state.
Before this he was a keen runner,
completing the New York, London
and Two Oceans Marathons, as well
as finishing the double-length
Comrades' marathon in South
Africa four times.
Following an article in the
Recorder at the end of August, he
received two donations of 500,
which went a long way towards
helping him reach his target of
2,000.
Roger's sister, Ashley Brownlow,
said: "We are so proud of Roger and
have been astounded by people's
generosity.
"The money he's raised is going
to Mencap, which is a very worth-
while cause."
You can still support Roger by
visiting his fundraising web page at
www.bmycharity.com and typing
his name into the "Sponsor online"
search box.
Teacher has
his eyes on
gold award
ATEACHER is hoping to strike
gold after being shortlisted in the
UK TeachingAwards.
Regional finalist Dan Lea, from
Gearies Infants School, Waremead
Road, Gants Hill, scooped an award
in June for helping six and seven-
year-old pupils to set up internet
blogs to share work with parents.
On Sunday, he will join 149 UK
finalists at the Theatre Royal Drury
Lane, London, to find out who the
12 gold "Plato" winners are.
He said: "I was nominated by one of
the parents and I was humbled to
win the regional award. But I am
particularly proud of the children,
they set up blogs, published work
online, posted questions and
discussed ideas with other students.
This was something sixth formers
might do, not six and seven-year-
olds."
The teacher, who lives in Highfield
Road, Woodford Green, took home
the BectaAward for Next
Generation Learning, but said it was
a team effort. "It's a fantastic school
and everyone has worked together to
incorporate information and
communication technologies into
lessons and learning."
