EDUCATION in Eastbourne has always
figured prominently in yesteryear edi-
tions of the Eastbourne Gazette.
And even to this day the achievements at
Sussex Downs College, one of the largest
colleges in the south east, are regularly
featured within the newspaper.
Sussex Downs College was established in
2001 by the merger of Eastbourne College
of Arts and Technology (ECAT) and
Lewes Tertiary College. A second merger
with Park College in 2003 made the
establishment the biggest college in
Sussex.
In 2007, the college received an `outstand-
ing' report from Ofsted, praising its lead-
ership, management and the quality of
teaching and learning. November 2008
saw the college receive the ultimate acco-
lade Beacon status from the Learning
and Skills Council (LSC).
In 2009, the college once again saw its
students achieve excellent results with a
97 per cent A Level pass rates and a 99.4
per cent pass rate for BTEC courses.
A college spokesperson said this week,
"Sussex Downs College would like to con-
gratulate the Eastbourne Gazette on its
150th birthday. Over the years we have
we have taken great pride in reading
about the success and achievements of
our students and staff in the Gazettes."
Dr John Blake, principal and chief execu-
tive at Sussex Downs said, "The real
worth, strength and quality of our college
is to be found in the excellence of our
staff and the brilliance of our students."
With campuses now in Eastbourne,
Lewes and three Skills Centres in
Newhaven, Uckfield and Hailsham and
as one of the largest further education
colleges in the south east, Sussex Downs
has a wide range of courses to choose
from and excellent ties to local businesses
in Eastbourne and the surrounding area.
Dr Blake added, "Sussex Downs College
looks forward to celebrating all the future
successes of our students with the
Eastbourne Gazette for many years to
come."

THE GAZETTE has been tracking the changes at
the Cavendish Hotel, a landmark on Eastbourne's
seafront, for many years.
Indeed many years of history have been chronicled
from the Grand Opening on July 19 1873 by the
7th Duke of Devonshire. The Duke inspected
many of the coffee rooms, well appointed and
handsomely fitted out bedrooms during the official
opening.
He also announced, "This handsome building is
now opened, under the proprietorship of Messrs
Gearing and Reed who are locally known as the
proprietors of the Royal Hotel, St. Leonards."
In more recent years, the hotel has been furnished
in a comfortable and complete which might be
described as almost say luxuriant style - by the
well know firm of Winter and Sons, of Wardour
Street, and the present owners say it is evident
that no expense had been spared to render the
appointments throughout as perfect as possible.
A hotel spokesperson said, "From all of us at the
Cavendish Hotel, we wish the Gazette a Happy
Birthday and thank them for recording our histo-
ry, and hope that we continue to make some
more!"
IN the year the Gazette celebrates its 150th
anniversary, a local business is unveiling refurbish-
ment in a building which dates back to 1860.
Dickeson & French wil be opening its doors follow-
ing refurbishment of its showroom on Eastbourne's
Memorial Square. It was in that building that
H.R.Browne established a chemist business 149
years ago.
Nicholas Horne, Dickeson & French's owner, said,
"The Dickeson & French showroom has been metic-
ulously planned and will provide both prestige and
beauty to this historic part of Eastbourne.
"Those who have played a part in this important
development bear testament to the quality of prod-
uct and workmanship that continues to flourish.
Even in these uncertain times, I am highly opti-
mistic for the future and confident of the compa-
ny's continued and growing success in the town."
The Dickeson and French showroom is scheduled
to open on October 31. It will display exquisite
lighting and furniture from France and Italy as
well as purpose-designed cabinetry and wrought
ironwork.
An extensive range of carefully selected floor cover-
ings and fabrics can also be viewed, together with
bespoke design drawings. Beautiful handmade cur-
tains and upholstery will also be on show.

director of design, can be contacted on 411046.
