bers. "It's not like that
anymore."
Even though the
after-school foot traf-
fic at for the soda
counter has died down
she said people still
come to Weirick's for a
malt, shake or a stroll
down memory lane.
"There was a
woman in here from
California who was
in town for her 65th
alumni banquet. She
stopped in because
this is where she was
proposed to in the
early 1940s," Weirick
Pierce said. "It's a
place people come
back to. Everyone
remembers Weirick's."
The collective
memories of the
community and the
generations of people

soda jerk coming back
to work day in and day

"I love the people,
that's what keeps me
coming back every
day," she said.
During the tough
economic times the
floor space could be
used to sell merchan-
dise in the century-old
drug store, Weirick
Pierce said the store
would lose something
if the counter was
removed.
"I suppose I could
get rid of the soda
fountain and use the
space for something
more profitable but it
draws people in and
I can't bear to get rid
of it," Weirick Pierce
said. "I have a soft
place in my heart so
I'll just keep it."

"I think people
come in just for
something different,"
Weirick Pierce said.
"We offer a little bit of
everything, especially
some nostalgia." z
