Surrey
W
ith the huge anniversary
celebrations that took place at
Hampton Court Palace and
Kew Gardens, 2009 was a year to
remember for Surrey tourism.
Fortunately, for anyone planning their
itinerary; 2010 promises even more.
RHS Wisley, near Woking, heads into
the year recognised as the south east's
top tourist attraction by the people who
matter at Tourism South East. While The
Lightbox art gallery, in Woking, was
awarded the small visitor attraction title.
Add the reopening of the renowned
Watts Gallery, in Compton, and Surrey's
first ever, large-scale outdoor festival of
arts and culture at Loseley Park in
Guildford, and it's certainly a time of
celebration in Surrey. The news that
Dame Judi Dench will be treading the
boards at Kingston's Rose Theatre has
caused huge excitement, too.
The county's pubs head into the year
with suitably laden awards cabinets. The
Crown. in Chiddingfold. was awarded
Cond Nast Johansens' most excellent
inn, while The Talbot Inn. in Ripley. was
voted the county's best by Surrey Life
online users. Surrey is also home to the
UK's largest vineyard, Denbies Wine
Estate in Dorking, as well as several
Michelin-starred restaurants, while
Gordon Ramsay part owns the Tante
Marie cookery school in Woking.
Major sporting events include the
Epsom Derby, PGA Championships at
Wentworth, and polo at Guards Polo
Club in Egham.
Lewis Hamilton and his McLaren
Formula One team are based in Woking
- where he'll be joined by world
champion Jenson Button this year. Most
of Chelsea's football stars live near their
Stoke d'Abernon training ground, while
the England rugby union team are also
based out of Pennyhill Park in Bagshot
whenever home international games are
on the horizon.
In fact, the county is perfect for a
little high-end celebrity spotting; with the
likes of Sir Michael Caine, Sir Cliff
Richard and Eric Clapton all living here.
It's easy to see why, with gorgeous
gardens, stunning views and historic
hotels peppering the county. Visit Surrey
and find out exactly why residents are so
proud to call the county home.
