THE power and passion of
Tennessee Williams's finest
writing comes to a Thanet
stage for one night only this
week.
A Streetcar Named Desire
explores themes of love and
betrayal, yet the many-lay-
ered play is far more complex
and seems to defy definition.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning
play is given new life in this
amateur production,directed
by Corinne Heady.
For more than 60 years,
Williams's play has fascinat-
ed audiences with its inter-
play between two wildly con-
trasting characters fading
Southern belle Blanche
DuBois and her violent,
brutish brother-in-law Stan-
ley Kowlski.
Driven out of her planta-
tion home and desperate to
maintain some facade of gen-
tility, Blanche is forced to
seek refuge with her sister
and her dominant husband
Stanley in their apartment.
But the pair are on a colli-
sion course as Stanley begins
to discover more about
Blanche's past.
The performance starts at
7.30pm and tickets cost
8/7. To book, call the box
office on 0845 130 1786 or
01227 787787.

tive rock sound, MirrorKicks

They visit Thanet as part
of a short tour to promote

based band is making a big
noise on the music scene.

vided by local heroes Tortilla
Army, who have won a
strong following for their
quality rock sound. Doors

JASON BYRNE
Tuesday, February 9
Gulbenkian Theatre, Canterbury
WITH his high energy and whip-smart wit,
Jason Byrne is a good bet for anyone wanting
a good laugh.
The relentlessly funny comedian has sold
more tickets than any other comic at the
Edinburgh Fringe Festival and blows critics
away with his ridiculous humour. Blending
comic mishaps, anecdotes and his Irish buf-
foonery, Byrne is a real treat for comedy fans.
After initially studying accountancy, Byrne
worked as a lighting rigger for several years
before becoming disillusioned with the work.
When he discovered how much money he
could earn for a short set, he made the leap
from backstage to spotlight, unwittingly
releasing an explosive comic talent.
As well as recording his own radio show for
BBC Radio 2 and appearing on Live at the
Apollo, the award-winning comedian also
acts and appeared as a football referee in the
classic Irish sitcom, Father Ted.
The show, which is suitable for over-16s,
starts at 7.45pm and tickets cost
16.50/14.50. Call the box office on 01227
769075 or visit the website at www.gul-
benkiantheatre.co.uk.
KICK up your heels and enjoy an after-
noon of toe-tapping music from The
Fling.
With infectious fiddle and vibrant
vocals, this act also get the party started
with mandolin, guitar and banjo. Catch
them live at The Tartar Frigate in
Harbour Street, Broadstairs, on Friday.
