rainbow trout
T
he rainbow trout is the Scottish loch angler's sport fish
of choice and for very good reasons. It is easily
accessible throughout the country, the quality of setting
and fishing is truly world-class and the price of a permit will
not break the bank.
Rainbow trout are actually not a native fish of Scotland and
were first introduced in 1888 from their original home on the
Pacific coast of North America. Although they have been
here ever since, they still do not breed naturally in the wild
and therefore all rainbow trout lochs in Scotland are stocked
to maintain the quality of fishing. However, the quality of the
stock fish is such that once they have been in the water for a
couple of months you would be hard pushed not to think
they were genuinely wild fish.
Although rainbow trout have been here for over 120 years,
it was not until the late 1960s that they began being regularly
stocked. The Lake of Menteith and Loch Fitty (now closed)
were the original pioneers and anglers owe them a massive
debt of gratitude. Eventually, during the mid to late 1980s,
the number of rainbow trout fisheries mushroomed and can
now be found everywhere from large lochs to small intimate

As there is no official close season for rainbow trout in
Scotland you can literally find fishing every single
