20 Summer 2008
The moist, warm air inside the Victorian Palm House makes me
sweat profusely as I follow Pete Brownless, Garden Supervisor at
the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, up the narrow metal steps
that lead to the upper levels of the glasshouse. I cannot but
wonder at the contrast between the cool, dry Scottish weather
and those enclosed artificial`tropics'. My attempt to capture the
primeval atmosphere of the diverse palm trees thriving in their
secluded little paradise is immediately thwarted by condensate
that clouds the lens within seconds of removing the cover. I
have to resort to the embarrassing tactic of wiping the lens and
shooting haphazardly from the hip.
