Councillors vote no
to wind farm plansCONTROVERSIAL plans
for a wind farm have
suffered a major setback
after councillors voted
unanimously for them to
be turned down.
The proposal by npower ren-
ewables is to build eight turbines
at the former wartime airfield at
Cotton Farm near Graveley.
The turbines could produce
enough electricity to supply the
average annual needs of around
6,900 to 10,000 homes.
However may residents have
been angered by the plans, fear-
ing the turbines would be too
close to homes, create noise poll-
ution and have a visual impact
on the area.
Npower renewables says the
proposed green energy source
would help meet UK Government
targets of supplying 15 per cent
of the country's electricity from
renewable sources by 2015, and
the UK's share of the European
Union's target to source 20 per
cent of energy from renewable
sources by 2020.
However campaigners against
the proposals were delighted
when South Cambridgeshire
District Council's planning
committee decided to rec-
ommend the plans for rejection
on Wednesday last week.
The recommendation will now
be passed on to Huntingdonshire
District Council which will
consider it as part of the
consultation process on the
application and which will make
the final decision on the matter.
Bev Gray, chairman of the
Cotton Farm Action Group
which opposes the plans, said:
"This is excellent news coming
on the back of recommended
refusals from all five parish
councils that have been
consulted on the wind turbines:
Toseland, Graveley, Great
Paxton, the Offords and Yelling.
All parish councils also voted
unanimously."
Mr Gray added: "Strong and
widespread opposition to
npower's scheme continues to
build not only are statutory
consultees firmly rejecting the
wind turbines, but local people
have to too."
