What is Transition
Tunbridge Wells?
Kate Sergeant says: "We are a group of
volunteers who got together in 2008 when
oil was $147 a barrel to look for positive
community-based solutions to make a
sustainable way of life."
Oil is now considerably cheaper, but
concerns about climate change and the
global dependence on oil that led to the
founding of the group are still looming.
Other regional groups have pioneered
schemes such as local
currency � most famously
the Lewes pound � which
aim to keep money in the
community.
Other issues of interest
include transport, waste,
food and energy.
Transition is a national
movement, comprising local groups all over
the country. It makes four key assumptions:
1. Life with dramatically lower energy
consumption is inevitable, and it's better to
plan for it than be taken by surprise.
2. Our communities presently lack the
resilience to enable them to weather the
severe energy shocks that will accompany
peak oil (where the oil supply reduces so
that it starts to dictate demand).
3. We have to act collectively, and we have
to act now.
4. By unleashing the collective genius
of those around us to creatively and
proactively design our energy descent,
we can build ways of living that are more
connected, more enriching, and that
ecognise the biological limits of our planet.

Transition Tunbridge Wells' next seed
swap is on February 13 from 10am to noon
at the community allotment.
Seed merchants have given a selection of
vegetable seeds, and those with nothing to
swap are welcome to make a small donation
instead.
