TEENAGERS WHO HAVE SEEN POVERTY OVERSEAS COULD WIN CITIZENSHIP HONOUR
Eyes opened
to suffering
TEENAGERS who saw the shock-
ing reality of poverty overseas
have spoken of the emotions that
engulfed them, writes ZJAN
SHIRINIAN.
The Ilford girls set off on different trips
across four continents to meet under-privi-
leged children.
The six youngsters, all members of Girl Guide
groups in the borough, have been nominated for
the Recorder/Rotary Young Citizen award.
Danielle Juffs, 16, went to South Africa in
August, spending two weeks helping out at an
orphanage in Durban for children whose parents
have HIV or AIDS.
The youngster, who goes to Canon Palmer
Catholic High School, Aldborough Road South,
Seven Kings, said: "It was very emotional. We
dropped off food at a village and what we gave
out had to last them a whole month we buy
more than that for one week."
Pal Ella O'Keefe, 16, who goes to Valentines
School, Cranbrook Road, Gants Hill, was struck
by the difference between rich and poor after
helping out at three orphanages in Argentina.
She said: "I think people need to see how
other people are living because we live in a
developed country. Even when you're there for a
short time, you can still make a difference to
people's lives."
In Mexico, Ellie Marsh, 13, met and played
games with under-privileged children.
The teenager, who also attends Valentines
High, said: "It was quite emotional really to
see how different my life is to theirs.
"In my living room I have a computer and
a TV, yet they might not even have the
chance to go to school."
Jessica Wilson, 17, and Alex Cole, 14, did
voluntary work in Switzerland in the sum-
mer, while Clare Rodway visited Iceland last
year.
Next year, all six will go on a three-week
trip around the world to countries including
Thailand where they will help out in the dif-
ferent communities they visit.
To make a donation for the trip, email girl-
