T has been a tough week
forthepeopletryingtobe
ShafRasul'sapprentice.
More than 2,000 people
applied for the one-year
programme to be mentored by
theDragon'sDenonlinehost.
The top 50 applicants
have just been put through a
rigorous selection including
team-building challenges,
psychometric tests, and
intensive one-to-one
interviewswithfiguresfromthe
entrepreneur's management
teaminEdinburgh.
Next up, the top ten will be
chosen and have to take on a
businesschallengenextweekto
gainoneofthethreespotsRasul
isoffering.
He said: "In my role as an
entrepreneur and business
mentor, I have been truly
inspired by some of the
enterprising youngsters I have
come across in the past
12months.
"However, the effects of the
recession can be seen across
every sector and it's clear that
there are limited prospects for
young people. I am a firm
believer that there are always
opportunities in an economic
downturn and the strategy
withinmybusinesshasbeento
consolidate, re-structure and
focus our efforts on sectors
which offer high-growth
potential.
"With this in mind, our

apprentice search that would
attract bright and innovative

mobile phones into a windfall for
kidsinRomania.
Angela Paterson was inspired by
hermum'scharityeffortsandseeing
pictures of the conditions many
childrenhavetoendure.
Using her extensive contacts, she
gathered outdated mobiles which
werenotbeingused.
The recycling effort raised almost
�600fortheFASTcharity.
Paterson, who acts as a board
adviser to companies including
Empire HR and Holyrood
Partnership,said:"MymotherJoyce
madeafact-findingtriptoRomania
to visit hospitals and orphanages,
thenreturnedwithherfriendElaine
Craigandateamofhelperstotryand
make a difference to a small
neglected community. I was
shocked to the core when she
showed me her photographs. I had
noideatherewassuchappallingand
crushing poverty on our doorstep
righthereinEurope.
"She knew she had to do
something,sosheandElainestarted
someseriousfundraising.
"When I heard about the
cash-for-old-mobiles scheme, I
realised it was one I could really
helpwith.
"I know hundreds of people in
business and I suspected many of
them, like me, had drawers full of
outdatedoldhandsets.
"SoIdecidedtoaskthemandsure
enough,theywereonlytoowillingto
help. Now, I'd like to thank
everybody who contributed. I'm
sure most of them will be delighted
toknowtheyhavedonesomegood."
