COMMUTERS could get
new platforms, buildings
and car parks as part of
a plan to revitalise the
rail network in East
Surrey.
Network Rail's final version of a
30-year vision to create a bigger
and better railway for the local
area includes recommendations for
longer trains, more seats and
improved access at stations.
The Route Utilisation Strategy
(RUS) details plans for new plat-
forms at Redhill and Gatwick.
Among the raft of proposals are a
commercial development at
Redhill which would mean a new
station building being built and
more parking spaces being provid-
ed as well as improvements to its
disabled access and platform
access from the subway.
Other proposals include the
installation of lifts at Horley sta-
tion and an extra 20-plus parking
spaces at Salfords station.
Further key recommendations
include using longer trains to
operate between the Redhill corri-
dor and the London stations,
building an additional platform at
Redhill on the western side of the
station and the insertion of
Clapham Junction stops in high
peak Gatwick Express services to
help reduce congestion for pas-
sengers.
The report also proposes intro-
ducing an additional train to run
during the rush hour into London
Victoria from the Redhill corridor,
possibly from 2014.
Plans are already in place to
improve the network over the next
four years.
These include the creation of a
new platform at Gatwick Airport,
increased train lengths from eight
cars to 12 on a number of peak
Thameslink services on the
Brighton main line and alterations
to track and signalling.
The RUS identifies meeting ris-
ing demand as a key challenge,
triggered by factors including the
continued development of housing,
including along the Redhill corri-
dor.
A survey of 3,300 passengers
using the morning peak service on
the Brighton main line highlighted
overcrowding on the peak services
which stop at Clapham Junction.
Fiona Taylor, from Network Rail,
said because of the high frequency
of trains already running on the
railway, there were few opportuni-
ties to run additional trains.
She said: "Much of the focus of
this strategy is on running longer
trains, providing more seats and
reducing overcrowding in order to
meet the growth in passenger
demand predicted for the coming
years.
"There are many challenges
ahead, but this strategy will help
improve the railway in a way
which benefits as many people as
possible."
PUPILS at The Hawthorns
School in Bletchingley were
able to get their hands on
real moon rocks.
All the pupils from Year
Two up to Year Eight were
able to study the rocks col-
lected from the moon by the
NASA Apollo space missions
in the 1960s and 1970s.
Some of the samples dated
back more than 4,000 mil-
lion years.
The children also handled
meteorites collected from
around the world, including
several from the deserts of
Australia, as part of a series
of activities on the topic of
space.
Older pupils enjoyed a visit
from an inflatable planetari-
um.
