YOURWEDDINGDAY 19
IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT HER...GOING TO BE A GROOM? THEN PAY ATTENTION
Don't get side-tracked by all that talk about
the wedding being the bride's big day it's
YOUR big day too.
If you think that all you have to do is survive
the stag night and get to the church on time,
then you could be in for a shock
Not every bridegroom is fully aware of the
responsibilities that he and his best man
should have on the big day
It is traditional for the groom to pay for the
honeymoon, the first-night hotel, the wedding cars, any
fees connected to the church and, in some cases the flow-
ers for the bride and bridesmaids, buttonholes and thank
you presents for the attendants.
He also needs to delegate certain duties to his best man.
The best man has a prominent role to play on the wedding
day. With lots of things to think about, he should make sure
he knows, and is known, to other key people such as the
bride's parents, the ushers and the chief bridesmaid.
The ushers will need to help seat guests in the church and
give out the orders of service.
The groom, best man and father of the bride will almost
definitely be required to make a speech.
Traditional order for the speeches: father of the bride pro-
poses a toast to the bride and groom and talks about his
daughter; groom responds and thanks everyone involved
in the wedding (grooms often choose to present bouquets
to the bride's mother, their own mother and anyone else
associated with arrangements).
The groom then traditionally raises a toast to the brides-
maids. The bride may then wish to speak, rather than her
husband speaking on her behalf.
Finally, the best man responds on behalf of the brides-
maids. He also reads any telegrams and talks about the
groom, preferably in an amusing way and taking care not
to put his foot in it.
