AN ATTRACTIVE little market town
with a most distinctive centre,
Downham Market is very much
worth a visit and a closer look.
The compact centre is easy to explore on foot
and you will soon feel the community spirit that
shines through in many of the local shops, with a
lot of traders having been established in the town
for a number of years.
There could not be much greater contrast
between the two areas bridged by Downham
Market. On the eastern side of town, the higher,
wooded lands reach into Norfolk, while the west-
ern side is flat, low Fenland, all the way to
Wisbech, March and well beyond.
A handy, central position makes the town a
useful base for exploring over a wide area of
West Norfolk. There are market days on Friday
and Saturday.
From Downham, where there is a good choice
of accommodation, the visitor is well-placed for
day trips up to the Norfolk Coast, outings to the
Fens, or even trips down to Ely and Cambridge,
both attractive centres.
And there is an excellent rail link. The main
King's Lynn to London line, which passes
through Ely and Cambridge, has a station conve-
niently near the centre of Downham Market.
FESTIVAL WEEK
Big event of the year in Downham is Festival
Week, which runs from Sunday, May 24, to
Sunday, May 31, this year, and attracts numerous
visitors, many of them staying with friends and
relatives.
There are events every day of festival week,
but the highlight is Carnival Day on the Bank
Holiday Monday, May 25, when a big parade of
floats through the town is followed by a full pro-
gramme of carnival events.
CLOSE TO Downham Market is
the village of Denver, which leads
to Denver Sluice, the key water
control system for the area. It
clears flood water from 800,000
acres of fenland and its seaward
doors can hold a tidal rise of 24
feet.
The sluice is popular for all
types of water sports during the
summer.
There is a sailing club, angling
club, moorings for cruisers and
boats for hire.
One of Denver's most famous
sons is Captain George William
Manby, the inventor of the life-
saving line-throwing mortar. He
was born in 1765 and is said to
have attended school in
Downham Market with Horatio
Nelson, although the disparity in
their ages makes many doubt
this.
Manby's mortar was used to
fire lifelines from the shore to
ships wrecked on rocks around
the country's coastline.
