Christmas in Wales18
lanterns light the way to a big
s
anta is set to lead the parade
as neath prepares for one of its
biggest events of the year the
switching on of the Christmas lights
on Friday, november 27.
this year's parade promises to be bigger and
better than ever, following the success of last
year.
Children are already preparing by creating
parade Christmas lanterns at workshops run by
neath Port talbot County Borough Council
special events team and neath town Centre
Communities First team in local schools and
at the Gnoll visitor centre.
Christmas festivities will be in full swing the
following afternoon when neath's town mayor
officially opens santa's Grotto in the Castle
hotel.
neath town hall also has a performance of
martha the Cat while st David's Church has a
traditional craft fair.
this year, developers st modwen's and the
Castle hotel have joined forces to sponsor the
Grotto opening on saturday, november 28,
from 12 noon to 4pm and saturday, December
5, 12 and 19 from 12 noon to 3pm.
the 4 fee includes entry into santa's Grotto, a
gift, photo and optional face painting.
neath's independent traders are joining in with
the festivities to make sure they can help their
customers make light work of choosing the
perfect Christmas treat.
Visitors can stock up on a range of goodies,
from accessories to add sparkle to Christmas
parties, to yuletide fare for adding glitter to the
Christmas table, plus a wide range of gifts,
children's party wear and toys.
the Christmas events follow the success of
the first neath Festival of Food and Drink in
October.
there was something for everyone who came
to the town then, from the official opening with
rugby mad youngsters quizzing Ospreys, Wales
and British lions star adam Jones on his career,
to Fair trade and the chance to buy fabulous
fresh produce from award-winning local
producers.
the success of the festival was down to what
neath does best public, private and voluntary
organisations working together to deliver what
they excel at for the benefit of everyone, and
demonstrating the quality of products and
services available in the town.
Yet again, it was an opportunity to showcase
neath as one of the friendliest and safest places
to live in, shop in and visit in Wales.
the event was co-ordinated by town centre
manager terry harvey, neath town centre
communities first co-ordinator Kim neyland and
ian hindle of la Crme Patisserie, but couldn't
have happened without a host of other willing
volunteers and partners.
their enthusiastic responses should ensure
that the festival returns as a regular event in the
calendar.
a spokesman for the economic Development
Unit of neath Port talbot County Borough
Council said: "We were pleased to be able to
support the inaugural Food and Drink Festival in
neath, and were encouraged by the reaction of
both visitors and retailers.
"as well as the stall holders, it gave the town
