BUDGET SLASHING: D.C. Council to vote on revised spending plan
The D.C. Council is scheduled to slash city spending Friday when it votes on revised
budgets for fiscal 2009 and 2010. Council members have said everything's on the table,
including tax increases, earmark reductions or outright eliminations, and wage freezes.
Mayor Adrian Fenty's gap-closing plan calls for service cutbacks, fee increases, job cuts
and the use of federal stimulus dollars to close a $340 million deficit.

Redskins open training camp

Thursday when the Washington Redskins
open training camp in Ashburn. Practices
will be open to the public through Aug. 8
-- fan appreciation day, to include an
intrasquad scrimmage. Call the Redskins'
training camp hotline at 703-726-7411 for
schedule updates. The team opens the
preseason against the Baltimore Ravens
at M&T Bank Stadium, followed by two
exhibition games at FedEx Field, versus
the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New
England Patriots. The regular season
kicks off Sept. 13 with an away game
against the New York Giants.

FIRST STEP FOR SOTOMAYOR: Supreme Court nominee faces committee vote
The Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to vote Tuesday on the nomination of Judge
Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court. Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy has
expressed confidence that Sotomayor will win the panel's approval, given that nearly a dozen
Republicans have publicly committed to vote for her. Sotomayor, a federal judge in New York
since 1992, would replace Justice David Souter.

SERVE IT UP: Legg Mason Tennis
Classic this week
Wimbledon runner-up Andy Roddick will be
among a cast of 38 ranked tennis players to
participate in the Legg Mason Tennis Classic,
Aug. 1-9 at the William H.G. Fitzgerald Tennis
Center in Rock Creek Park. A portion of the
proceeds benefits the Washington Tennis &
Education Foundation, which seeks to improve
the lives of Washington-area youth through
tennis, education and community-based
activities. The Fitzgerald center seats 7,500.
