Improving footpaths and
removing or replacing stiles
with gates is making access
to the National Park easier
for the less able and for
families with pushchairs.
We aim to remove as many
stiles as we can from the
Pembrokeshire Coast Path National
Trail and from other footpaths. In
places where stiles are still needed
to contain livestock, we are trying
to make them more user-friendly.
Ramblers' Association member
Audrey Millichip often walks with
friends on the Coast Path near the
Neolithic burial chamber Carreg
Samson, Abercastle, where stiles
have been replaced and footpath
improvements made.
Audrey said: "I've enjoyed
walking in this beautiful area for
nearly 30 years. I'm 82 now and
while I can still manage stiles, now
that the gates have been put in
I shall keep going until I'm 92."
West Area Senior Ranger Philip
Lees said: "If you had walked the
entire Coast Path in 1993 you would
have had to clamber over 531 stiles.
If you walked it tomorrow you would
only have to climb over 116. We are
grateful to the farmers along the
Coast Path for their co-operation in
allowing our Wardens to carry this
out this work, making the Path
easier to walk."
The Authority carries out the
work using funding from the Welsh
Assembly Government's Coastal
Access Improvements Programme.

Hidden treasure
revealed
for all to see
Overgrown hedges along
the Coast Path at Amroth
were replaced with low-
level hand-laid hedge,
opening up the sea view
for walkers, cyclists and
horse riders. The work was
done in liaison with the
National Trust and the local
farmer and was funded by
Countryside Council for
Wales.
Richard Hughes, of
R&M Countryside Services,
is pictured showing his
family and Park Ranger Tim
Jones the spectacular view
over the hedge he laid.
Two more beach wheelchairs are available to help people with mobility
problems to enjoy Broad Haven beach, thanks to fundraisers' efforts. The
fundraisers (pictured) cycled, walked and rowed around Pembrokeshire
last summer to raise money. They handed the chairs - one of which is a
child's chair - over to Beryl Thomas-Cleaver, Chairman of P.I.P.P.A. (the
Physically Impaired People of Pembrokeshire Association).
Beach wheelchairs are available at the
following locations in the National Park:
