PCM's girls basketball team returns two seniors for the 2009-2010 campaign that
starts Monday at home against Pella Christian. The two seniors are anything but
alike, with guard Shelby Houseman (left) standing in at 5-foot-4 and post player
Taylor Van Roekel hovering around 6-foot.
Reloading, not Rebuilding
MONROE -- Losing two
all-state players in Lind-
sey Vande Wall and Katlyn
Wood will be tough for PCM
girls basketball coach Ben
Anderson.
But it's not going to stop
the Mustangs this season.
" W e
a l w a y s
have the
attitude
o f w h y
not us,"
A n d e r -
son said.
"We have
g o o d
kids that
will give
a good,
solid effort. There are going
to be a lot of changes on the
basketball court this sea-
son."
And when you lose some
great basketball players, it's
no wonder why. PCM lost
five seniors from last sea-
son, a team that went 21-3
and won the Heart of Iowa
Large School title.
Lindsey Vande Wall led
the team in 2008 with 15.3
points per game and 116
assists. Katlyn Wood was
second on the team with
13.8 points per game and
led the team in rebounds.
From 2008, the Mustangs
lost 849 points of the 1,420
points scored from a team
that lost to eventual state
qualifier Central Decatur.
But coming back for
2009, PCM returns some
solid players that Anderson
has to work around.
Senior Shelby Houseman
-- a returning second team
all-conference selection --
is the top returning scorer
from last season. She aver-
aged 8.6 points per game as
a speedy guard. Post player
Jordan Wood -- a junior
-- averaged 6.6 points per
game last season and was
second on the team with
136 rebounds.
PCM also returns senior
Taylor Van Roekel and
juniors Stephanie Hayden,
Megan Schippers and Katie
Walker who saw varsity
playing time last season.
The Mustangs have a
total of 23 players out this
season.
"We're not going to have
very many over six feet,"
Anderson said. "The major-
ity of our kids are going to
be under 5-10. We should
be quick. We're just not
going to have a lot of depth
at the post position. We'll
hopefully be an up tempo
team."
As far as newcomers to
the team, Anderson said
that battle is wide open.
"We're just getting into
practice and getting things
split up," Anderson said. "I
look past the six or seven
that have experience, and
we'll be young, but not nec-
essarily inexperienced."
He said the team has
been working well togeth-
er early in practice, but
this team will have a lot to
prove.
"We're going to need
people to shoot the ball and
until we can prove that, it'll
be our Achilles heel."
Heading into the season
that starts Monday against
Pella Christian, Anderson
knows his team will see
some tough competition
within the Heart of Iowa
Conference. North Polk has
moved to the Small School
side this season, while
Nevada has entered the
Large School side.
"Nevada is going to be
pretty tough," Anderson
said. "I know we played
them over the summer, and
they start some kids that are
5-10 or 6-foot. Roland-Story
has Maddie Oliver. North
Polk will be good on the
other side. South Hamilton
has Katie Gustafson. It'll be
interesting."
Roland-Story was a state
qualifier last season out of
the Heart of Iowa.

MONROE -- For PCM
boys basketball coach Fred
Lorensen, this team might
be described as a jig-saw
puzzle.
PCM's top two scorers
from last season are now a
sophomore and junior --
Scott Bruxvoort and Josh
Fosenburg -- and now
Lorensen is left with the
chore of filling three spots
from graduated seniors
Gavin Burns, Wes Van
Wyngarden and Kyle Kane.
"It's kind of a weird
thing,"
Lorens-
en said.
" W e
h a v e
kids that
h a v e
quite a
b i t o f
experi-
e n c e ,
b u t
w e ' r e
still pretty young. We have
a pretty good mix. It's been
a nice mix of experience
and still having some youth
around."
The Mustangs finished
18-6 overall last season
and 15-3 in the Heart of
Iowa Conference, with
Bruxvoort leading the
team with 13.7 points per
game. Fosenburg averaged
12.7 points per game, led
the team in steals and both
Bruxvoort and Fosenburg
were the top two leading
rebounders.
Both also were first-
team all-conference selec-
tions.
Having those two play-
ers back makes the expec-
tations rather positive for
Lorensen.
"We always have high
expectations," Lorensen
said. "Right now we just
need to focus on improv-
ing. We always want to
contend for a conference
championship, and we
want to be playing our best
basketball when the tour-
nament rolls around in late
February."
Roland-Story won the
Large Division last season.
Lorensen said they will be
a favorite until someone
can beat them, along with
Bondurant-Farrar, Jeffer-
son-Scranton and his Mus-
tangs.
For PCM to win a con-
ference title, Lorensen feels
his team needs to improve
offensively.
"We've been trying
to improve offensively,"
Lorensen said. "We lost a
couple games last year --
Roland-Story where I think
we scored 35 points in that
game and got beat 45-35
and Des Moines Chris-
tian in the district final we
scored 43 points and got
beat in a close game. We
just need to do a better job
of getting the ball in the
basket."
When it comes to post-
season district and sub-
state, Lorensen looks no
further than the team that
knocked the Mustangs out
last season -- Des Moines
Christian. Panorama also
has a solid team.
To improve offensively
and contend for postsea-
son success, the Mustangs
are going to need help
from other players who

A Youth Movement
MONROE -- It might
just be the end of the first
week of the season for PCM
wrestling coach Matt Tee-
ter, but he still has a long
way to go to determining
his lineup.
And the reason can be
summed up in one word
-- youth.
"We're a very young
team all around," Teeter
said. "We have two seniors.
We're so young."
The Mustangs lost just
four seniors -- Brandon
Teeple, Cory Schmidt, Nick
Vanderpool and Ben Nash
-- and return a total of 28
wrestlers for the season
that starts Dec. 3, at Perry.
Teeple and Vander-
pool both qualified for the
state meet at 112 and 125,
respectively, while Nash
wrestled at 215. Sopho-
more Dalton Kingery is the
lone returning state quali-
fier for the Mustangs after
taking third place last sea-
son at 103 with a record of
40-3.
"We have a couple other
kids that he's been wres-
tling with," Teeter said.
"It's good to have someone
like him around."
Kingery will be moving
up to 112 this season, leav-
ing 103 as an open spot
for the Mustangs. Bryce
Wignall will be taking over
Schmidt's spot at 119.
"Cory wrestled half the
year and Bryce wrestled
the other half," Teeter said.
