Student Voice
Encouraging leadership, Upward Bound
created a Student Advisory Board
elected each summer session. Three
students from each high school serve
on the nine-member board and help plan
events for the coming year. Members
meet in person and through video confer-
encing four times a year. Part of the
success of Upward Bound, according to
Atkins, is the students' ability to socialize
and communicate with students from other
schools and cultures. That's why the pro-
gram includes multiple opportunities for
them to come together for a variety of activi-
ties, including college plays, sporting events,
guest speakers, field trips and more. "Social
time is a key part of these events," she said.
"It builds peer support and a caring community.
This helps with program retention."
The Value of Education
Moran attests she appreciates both the academic
and cultural components of the program, as well as
the chance to meet new people, including fellow
Upward Bound students, mentors and teachers. "The
experience has helped me understand what I need to do
to get to college, and the summer program has helped me
prepare for
the upcoming school year," she said.
Moran's mother, Diane Moran, agrees. "Emily and I both believe that a college education is important.
The opportunities are greater and the experience is awesome. The Upward Bound program has allowed
Emily to focus on her studies and realize grades are important for college entrance."
Thanks to Upward Bound, many area high school students like Moran are better prepared to meet the
entrance requirements of college and to succeed once they are accepted. Next year, Moran will graduate
from high school and begin pursuit of a bachelor's degree. She won't be alone. Her mother, who is
currently working toward an Administrative Assistant Associate of Applied Science Degree at Moraine Park,
hopes to continue on and earn a bachelor's degree as well.
At Beaver Dam, Fond du Lac and Ripon High Schools, the Upward Bound opportunity is available to up
to 20 qualifying students per school in grades 9-12.
