The new 400 megawatt (MW) facility -
together with the power station's existing
100MW capability - will burn biomass
alongside coal and at full capacity provide
12.5 per cent of the station's total power
output and save more than 2.5 million
tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year.
The 80m co-firing plant heralds the
latest stage of an important period in the
progress and development of the renewables
strategy of Drax Power Limited, which
owns and operates the power station.
Early next year, work could also be
underway on the first of three 290MW
dedicated biomass-fired power stations
which Drax is planning in partnership with
Siemens Project Ventures.
In tandem with these ambitious plans to
develop renewable electricity generation
Drax has been equally determined and
committed to creating an effective biomass
market in the UK.
Drax's focus on UK biomass includes
energy crops (such as miscanthus, short
rotation coppice and short rotation
forestry), traditional agricultural by-
products such as straw, as well as woody
residues from the forestry sector.
Jason Woods, bio energy manager,
explains: "We have worked with leading
producer groups to develop an effective
supply chain and will continue to do so."
Last summer Drax also introduced its
Green Shoots programme to offer more
options to farmers, foresters and other
landowners nationwide to be part of the
biomass market and work directly with
Drax.
"A direct supply contract with Drax
gives farmers and foresters the assurance
that they are dealing with one of the UK's
leading power generators, that is financially
strong, secure and reliable and clearly
focused on the biomass sector," adds Jason
Woods.
Under the Green Shoots scheme, which
has already attracted more than 50 growers
supplying over 20,000 tonnes of material
this harvest, Drax pays farmers directly.
Once growers have entered into a Green
Shoots contract, details are either passed on
to the management company working with
Drax or the farmers are free to make their
own arrangements.
"We firmly believe in securing biomass
from sustainable sources and to reinforce
this commitment we have established a
sustainability policy. All our purchase
contracts aim to ensure suppliers comply
with and provide information to show these
principles are being met," says Jason
Woods.
