Burglars target
homes left empty
HOUSEHOLDERS
are being warned to
ensure their homes
look lived in even
when they are out,
after burglaries at
two homes when occ-
upants were away.
Police have urged peo-
ple to take simple prec-
autions to deter thieves
who have struck in God-
manchester and St Ives.
The first break-in happ-
ened at a house in Fairey
Avenue, Godmanchester,
between October 25 and
November 1, when jewel-
lery, a games console a
credit cards were taken.
The second happened
between October 31 and
November 2, at a house in
Hill Rise, St Ives, where
jewellery and cash were
stolen.
Sally Davies, police
crime reduction manager,
said: "For anyone leaving
their house and returning
after dark, or going away
for a few days or longer, it
is important that their
house has the appearance
of being occupied.
"Look at your home
through the eyes of an
opportunist burglar."
She said householders
could use timers to turn a
radio or lights on, rather
than simply leave a hall
light on, and urged res-
idents to ensure fences
and gates were in good
order, fit bolts and locks
as well as external lights
to illuminate the property.
She also said poss-
essions should not be left
on view and keys should
be removed from doors
and windows, although
keys should be in a safe
place where they could be
found in an emergency.
Mrs Davies said cur-
tains should not be left
closed as this could give
the impression that the
house was empty and also
suggested getting a friend
to check the house, move
the curtains and pick up
the post.
Anyone with any infor-
mation about the burglar-
ies is urged to call police
on 0845 4564564 or Crime-
stoppers on 0800 555111.
