aa ccrrooccooddiilleeCROCODILE farmer Andy
Johnson visited the House of
Lords yesterday after winning a
top regional award from the
Countryside Alliance.
Andy, from Old Hurst, won the
rural enterprise award for the East of
England and was competing against
the other regional winners for the
national title.
Head judge Alice Barnard said: "I
have never judged such an excep-
tional venture. It is a worthy winner
and a true rural enterprise."
Enterprise is certainly the name of
the game at Church Farm in Church
Street, which has become the first
crocodile farm in Britain.
The stock has recently moved into
a purpose-built enclosure ready for
breeding.
Andy has also developed a busy
farm shop, selling a huge range of
meat products which are mainly
sourced from the farm or his broth-
er's, and also includes pies, cheese,
vegetables and a tea room.
He is also keen to use the farm as
an educational resource.
Andy said: "After the problems we
encountered with getting a licence
to sell the range of produce we offer,
it is nice to be rewarded for our
efforts.
"It is really great that our cus-
tomers appreciate the service we
offer and have nominated and sup-
ported us through this competi-
tion."
North West Cambridgeshire
MP Shailesh Vara, who will be
supporting Johnson's at the
awards, said: "It is important
that the hard work of British
farmers is recognised and I am
pleased that these awards pres-
ent a way in which this work
can be celebrated."
buzz of
excitement.
"I was
immediately
struck by the
enthusiasm
and passion of
the team that run the enterprise.
"I was amazed at how diverse this
working farm really is."
