Meantime, the wild brown trout
fishing in Scotland is seen by many
experts as quite simply the best in the
world.
Our lochs and rivers are full of hard
fighting wild brown trout and some
say that, pound for pound, they are
the hardest-fighting brown trout
anywhere. Incredibly this quality of
fishing does not cost an arm and
a leg. In fact, it is amazingly cheap
and a permit can cost as little as
�5-�10 per day. Yes, as little as that
for the fishing quality of your dreams.
As far as river fishing is concerned,
the Annan, Don, Tummel and Tweed
are classic rivers and attract anglers
from every corner of the globe to pit
themselves against their fantastic trout.
Moreover, there are a huge number of
other rivers and streams up and down
the country that provide fishing for all
tastes. You can even river fish for
brown trout right in the middle of
Scotland's two main cities, Edinburgh
or Glasgow. The official brown trout
season runs from March 15 to October
6, inclusive. However, some waters
decide to open later and close earlier
so always be sure to check in
advance.
During the winter months many
Scottish anglers turn their attention to
the fantastic grayling - the Queen of
the River. The rivers Annan, Clyde,
Earn, Nith, Tay, Teviot, Tummel and
Tweed hold large numbers of these
magnificent fish. These rivers usually
feel surprisingly quiet considering the
exceptional quality of fishing available.
Combine this with low permit costs
and you have the ideal excuse for an
out-of-season break and some
amazing fishing.
Wonderful shore and boat fishing is
available throughout Scotland's
magnificent coastline and islands.
Scotland has everything from
specimen hunting for giant skate and
shark to serious shore fishing in
stunning scenery. For the boat angler,
top-quality charters are readily
available. The quality of shore fishing is
so good around the coast of Scotland
that it is virtually impossible to choose
the best place. Up the west coast
there are numerous hidden corners
with exceptional fishing, yet haven't
seen an angler in years.
Scotland offers a quality of pike
fishing that is unmatched by any
European country.
Until quite recently coarse fishing lived
under the shadow of game fishing,
though this is no longer the case.
Coarse fishing is now very popular and
the quality is very high. However, the
top species is without a doubt the
pike. Scotland's pike fishing is
incredible yet the pressure on the best
waters is actually very low. They are
almost universally recognised for their
fantastic quality and are reckoned by
many to be possibly the
hardest-fighting pike in the world. In
many Scottish waters they can grow to
a size that will take your breath away.
Twenty pound plus pike don't raise
many eyebrows. They have to hit thirty
plus before that happens. The fishing
is literally all year round and, incredibly,
the permit price is nearly always
minimal - if not free! However, the one
thing to remember is that live baiting is
illegal in Scotland. The good news is
that you don't need a rod licence. Just
buy a permit or get permission and
start fishing for that pike of a lifetime.

Among the breathtaking items on display at Glasgow's Kelvingrove
Art Gallery and Museum you will discover the skull of a pike caught
in Loch Lomond during the 1960s, astonishingly thought to have
weighed over 70lbs - that's the equivalent of over 31 bags of sugar!
