Advertiser's Announcement
Nuclear
skills come
to the four
A
TEAM of Sellafield workers
had good reason to celebrate
recently after all
successfully graduating
from their MSc course.
Tony Gibson, Joe Rogers, Frank
Degraff, Phil Moore and Lee Place
completed the MSc in
decommissioning and environmental
clean-up.
The course is developed by
Lancaster University and delivered
by the University Engineering
Department, Lancaster
Environmental Centre and Westlakes
Research Institute.
The course draws on
research-based expertise from the
university's departments of
engineering and environmental
science and on worldwide
industry-based expertise with
contributions from the Nuclear
Decommissioning Authority and
regulatory bodies.
The syllabus is a combination of
engineering, safety and
environmental material necessary to
empower engineers across broad
range of disciplines associated with
legacy facilities.
The course lasts for two years on a
part-time basis. The areas covered in
the course are significantly varied
from operational safety, project
management and contaminated land
issues to decontamination processes,
decommissioning techniques and
environmental risks.
Frank Degraff, shift coordinator,
said: "This course has taught me a
great deal on decommissioning
processes and strategies.
"My dissertation research really
highlighted to me that we have many
unique decommissioning challenges
on our site and the course has given
me a greater level of understanding
and the tools to be able to deal with
such projects.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed it, but
it has been really difficult to read up
on neutron absorption or nuclear
chemistry on my rest days!"

Cumbria
pools its
human
resources
C
UMBRIAN businesses were given a
motivational boost last week at the
county's first conference for human
resource specialists.
The Cumbria branch of the Chartered
Institute of Personnel and Development
held the conference, which was themed
`managing in difficult times', at Rheged.
The event, sponsored by Dodd and Co
accountants, saw workshops, exhibitions,
speakers and networking opportunities.
Initially planned for Autumn 08, the
conference was rescheduled to tailor for
the current challenges facing businesses
during the recent recession.
Barbara Craig, chairman of the Cumbria
branch of CIPD, said: "The number of
people who attended the conference
highlights the importance of HR and of
finding ways to support employers through
the financial crisis."
Judith Brew, owner of Seaton-based
company Bowness HR Ltd and a key
organiser of the conference, said: "The day
was very rewarding, an excellent
opportunity to network with peers.
"There was so much HR knowledge
available that everyone had the chance to
learn something new. Developing a strong
HR network in the county can only help
make Cumbria's businesses stronger and
more able to adapt to changing needs."
