Bay Area.
In addition to its close
proximity to the Nimitz Free-
way, the plant is only blocks
away from the I-680, giving
drivers easy access not only to
San Jose, but Oakland, Rich-
mond and other East Bay cit-
ies. Drivers can also catch U.S.
101 and I-280 on the west side
of the Bay to funnel papers to
cities adjoining San Francisco.
But before TNC can cast
its net to snare other custom-
ers, Hughes said it's critical that Hearst is happy with the quality and production
options TNC is able to provide.
"It's imperative that the Chronicle is successful, because its success is our
success."
Clearly, TNC has the technical infrastructure to handle as much production
as it can get, and the plant -- which already can accommodate as many as two
more triplewide presses and additional CTP systems -- also has enough room on
its 24-acre site to expand even further, Hughes said.
"We can grow as we need to," he said.
And growth is exactly what Transcontinental hopes to achieve for its U.S.
offspring.

Through an agreement with The New York Times, Transcontinental also pro-
duced certain regional editions of The Times for distribution in ontario and in upstate
New York.
for its u.s. venture, richard said Transcontinental continues to evolve the
management model to support its philosophy, primarily in the arena of reminding
employees that they don't always have to rely on a supervisor to make a decision.
it's an evolution," richard said about starpoint. "we try to improve it each time
we open a new plant. in the u.s., there remains a tendency to view managers as author-
ity figures. at TNC, we want managers to play more of a coaching role. They are there
to support our employees. we stressed to our people that they have the initiative to act
collaboratively, with their managers and their fellow employees, so we have to teach
everyone that they can all contribute in making a final decision."

S.F. Chronicle to run glossy pages in daily
The san francisco Chronicle plans to run up to 12 supercalendered pages per press run
beginning this month, becoming the first u.s. paper to use glossy paper as a regular com-
ponent of its daily production.
on the days the Chronicle has both advance and
main runs, the paper could run as many as 24 super-
calendered pages, and sunday editions could include
even more of the glossy stock, Chronicle president
mark adkins told News & Tech.
"we believe (running glossy pages) will be very
powerful, and advertisers are extremely excited about
it," adkins said. sunday editions of the Chronicle could
include additional heatset-produced pages and sec-
tions, containing both editorial and advertising, he said.
The heatset towers have already been used to
produce 12 pages of the Chronicle's daily content,
albeit on newsprint.
