NVQ � National Vocational Qualifications
These aim to give you the skills and knowledge you
need for work in a specific career. They are ideal if you
know the job you wish to train for, or if you are already
employed and want to improve your skills. They require
no formal examinations as you are continually assessed
on competencies in the work environment.
BTEC Diplomas
> BTEC National Diplomas are equivalent to three
A-levels � you study for 24 months.
> BTEC National Certificates are equivalent to two
A-levels � you study for 18 months.
> BTEC National Awards are equivalent to one A-level
� you study for 12 months.
These vocational qualifications are valued by industry
and higher education alike. They can be studied at one
of four levels: First, Award, Certificate or National.
The Diploma
The Diploma is a new employer-designed qualification
offered at three levels and suitable for those aged
between 14 and 19. Gaining a Diploma proves that
you can deliver essential skills, manage your time, work
in a team, track your progress, explore new ideas and
understand the working world.
Functional Skills
As part of any vocational course you develop your
skills in Information Technology, Communication and
Application of Number. These are skills that employers
value and they form a separate qualification in their
own right.
There are also opportunities to undertake the extended
Functional Skills of Problem Solving, Working with
Others, and Improving Own Learning and Performance.

either in your first year or throughout your studies
