Town action plan
goes online at lastTHE Sawbridgeworth Town
Action Plan is now online.
A 19-page abstract of the full 80-
page document, setting out the
community's vision for the
future, has gone live on the town
council's website.
Publication of the blueprint,
which will help shape Sawbridge-
worth over the next 10 years, is
the culmination of almost a year's
work to bring together the aspira-
tions of residents.
It finally went up online after
the town council pledged to make
the STAP available to the public
by the end of January after the
steering group was accused of
dragging its feet.
In November, resident Clive
Atkins, who sits on the commit-
tee, criticised the council for
pushing back the original sum-
mer 2009 publication date.
This week, Mr Atkins, of
Gilders, said he felt let down by
the council for failing to deliver
on its promise. "It is still my opin-
ion that the STAP should and
could have been published in
whatever form and in the hands of
local residents and businesses
much sooner than the end of
January 2010," he said.
The action plan covers all
aspects of life in the town, from
provisions for young people and
the elderly to street furniture.
It sets out how residents want
to see their town develop over the
next decade and how this can be
achieved. It is hoped the docu-
ment will guide decision-makers
at district and county level when
it comes to determining policies.
The six main priorities identi-
fied through public consultation
are roads and transport, housing,
car parking charges, support for
the voluntary sector, support for
local traders and provision of a
new Scout hut.
Town clerk Richard Bowran
said: "Apart from being a guide for
the town council for future
actions, it will also feed into the
district council's Local Develop-
ment Framework and, when the
town council is consulted, will be
an authoritative source for
expressing public opinion.
"This is a living action plan and
the steering group will report
back at the annual town meeting
each year on progress and
updates."
Copies of the condensed ver-
sion of the STAP are due to be
delivered to every household once
printing costs have been agreed
by the town council. In the mean-
time, the full document is avail-
able to view at the library in The
Forebury and the council offices
in Bell Street.
Students and staff flag
up their support for Haiti
PUPILS at Leventhorpe
School showed their
support for the people of
Haiti by wearing the
colours of their national
flag.
Students and staff at the
Cambridge Road
secondary wore red and
blue last Friday, raising
more than 2,400 for
survivors of the
devastating earthquake
three weeks ago which
killed an estimated
150,000 and has left
thousands homeless.
Carol Jones, the school's
global dimension co-
ordinator, said: "Students,
parents and staff wanted
to do something to help.
"The majority wore
something red and blue,
whether it was socks, T-
shirts, scarves or hoodies,
and several girls and even
one member of staff
painted their nails in the
Haiti colours.
"The best outfit of all
was worn by a Year 12
student who came dressed
as Spider-man!"

RESIDENTS can read all about it in the
first edition of Sawbridgeworth town
council's own newsletter.
The four-page glossy pamphlet has been
distributed to 5,000 properties in
Sawbridgeworth and Spellbrook this
week to let them know what their local
councillors have been up to.
As well as a welcome message from the
mayor Angela Alder, there is information
about the new Sawbobus service, the
next farmers' market and photos of the
Christmas competition winners.
The newsletter, which will be published
quarterly, is part of the town council's
drive to keep residents better informed.
Cllr Alder said that together with its new
and improved website, the newsletter
was part of an initiative to provide more
diverse and efficient ways of
communicating with the community.
The council welcomes feedback on the
first edition as well as suggestions for
future content. Contact town clerk
Richard Bowran on (01279) 724537 or
