12 Genoa Area Guide
Step into the Kishwaukee Valley Heritage Museum, on the west end of Genoa's
downtown business district, and it's like stepping back in time. Visitors are
immediately surrounded by familiar, and some not-so-familiar artifacts, all
related to the Genoa area.
For those who grew up here, it really is their own heritage at their fingertips, from
the upright piano made at the factory that was right across the street to the table
on which the very first Farm Bureau was established. The buildings themselves
are pieces of Genoa history, including the town's old train depot and its original
water works building.
Inside each you'll find pieces of history that some visitors may remember from
their own days, and some their parents, grandparents, or even great-grandparents
could wax fondly about. Farm tools, trinkets from old town businesses, vintage
clothing and children's toys transport visitors through the past generations of
Genoa. The old water works building even houses gadgets from Leich Electric,
a long-standing Genoa business, paraphernalia from the town's fire department
over the years, and even an old hand-carved, horse-drawn hearse.
