Hopes high for architects
in line for prestigious award
CAMBRIDGE architects
are celebrating being
shortlisted for a
prestigious award.
Buildings in the running for
the RIBA East Spirit of Ingenuity
awards this year include projects
in and around Cambridge, and
work by Cambridge architects
further afield.
Included is the new Anglesey
Abbey visitor centre at Lode des-
igned by Cowper Griffith Archit-
ects, and private houses in
Auckland Road by Ashworth
Parkes and Latham Road by
Oriel Prizeman.
A home in Ely, designed by
Graeme Lockhart, who works in
that city, has also been praised.
Local architects working in
other areas who have been
shortlisted include Lyster Grillet
and Harding for the Gateway
Academy in Tilbury; RMJM for
the Waterfront Building in
Ipswich; and Donald Insall
Associates for work at Binham
Priory in Norfolk.
Judges have been visiting the
various sites this month and the
winners will be announced in
September at a dinner in Peter-
borough.
Cambridge has the highest
concentration of architects
outside London. The awards
recognise the creative designs
showcased in this region.
Emma Foxley, of Cowper
Griffith Architects, said: "We are
very pleased with how well the
building has been received. We
don't do the job for the
recognition, but it's always nice
to receive the compliment."
Oriel Prizeman, another of the
shortlisted architects, feels the
same. She said: "I'm delighted
to have been shortlisted, it's
fantastic and I'm very proud of
this project as it was a long-term
thing and it has come together
really well.
"If it won it would be a really
big deal."
Oriel's design uses stone and
bronze within the building. She
said: "The materials used were
of really high quality, and I think
that's the unusual thing about
the building.
"After the three or four years
that have been spent on it I'm
thrilled it's come to fruition."
