Continued from Page 10
heyday of the Hanseatic League.
Two of them, Franz Tunder and Diderik
Buxtehude, lived and worked in Lubeck
throughout the second half of the 17th
century, while Georg Philipp Telemann
was the Director of Music in Hamburg and
was thought, in his time, to be the equal
of Bach and Handel.
Their music is set alongside pieces by
their great English contemporaries, Purcell and
Handel.
One of the highlights of the Hanse Festival will
be a specially devised classical music concert for
families with a fully accessible programme
including classics popularised through television
and media.
The concert will culminate in a performance of
Peter and the Wolf. To encourage an appetite for
classical music and to make it more visually
spectacular, elements will be brought to life by
through the use of puppetry.
The whole occasion will have a distinct
Hanseatic flavour, with both European musicians
and a European market that will be bringing stall-
holders from many member countries.
The Borough Council of King's Lynn & West
Norfolk is building on the success of previous
historical and maritime festivals by making this
first ever Hanse Festival for King's Lynn bigger
and better.
Festival Highlights include:
Festival Opening on Friday, July 31 with fire-
works, choirs, Eddie Seal Band
History Forum Top European expert speak-
ers on Hanseatic History July 31-August 1 in
the Green Quay
Quayside Entertainment August 1-2

THE Lisa von Lubeck, pictured om Page 10,
will sail from her home port to spend the Hanse
Festival weekend in King's Lynn.
She is a reconstruction of a 15th century car-
avel and this will be the first time she has sailed
out of the Baltic.
The ship will sail up the River Great Ouse on
Thursday, July 30 and moor at Boal Quay until
Monday August 3.
The reconstruction of the ship was a project in
the Hanseatic city of Lubeck. Approximately 350
people worked on the ship during its five-year
construction period (1999-2004) 240 were
unskilled young adults who were unemployed.
They learnt lots of new skills during their time
working on her, including carpentry and engi-
neering; many went on to take further qualifica-
tions.
They were supported by dedicated volunteers,
who still give their time to keep this magnificent
ship going.
The Lisa von Lubeck is similar to a Hanse
Kogge, one of many types of ship during the
Hanseatic period in the North and Baltic Seas.
The ship will be open to the public over the
weekend.
