he's a successful Cumbrian
businesswoman.
Beautiful, energetic,
ambitious, with a lovely
home, a wonderful family
and a smile that could
stop traffic.
She's not yet 40 and she has breast
cancer.
At one time, not too long ago, that
would have been shocking enough to
stop us all in our tracks. But
younger and younger women are
diagnosed with breast cancer
every year. It's a fact of life we
can't ignore.
She's not named here
because, as she begins
chemotherapy following a
mastectomy and breast
reconstruction, she's entitled
to some peace and privacy
but this lady's experience
is becoming
increasingly
common among
young, fit
women who had
good reason to
anticipate trouble free, rudely
healthy lives.
It is estimated that around 170,000
women alive in the UK have been
diagnosed with breast cancer in the
last 10 years.
Though 80 per cent of them are
over 50, the number of younger
women diagnosed and receiving
treatment is rising the good news
is that earlier detection is likely to
be the main reason for this.
And early detection is everything.
It means procedures can be less
radical, less traumatic, more
effective. Most importantly that
brings even better news. It means
that many thousands of women who
receive that terrifying diagnosis can
now be confident of being just fine,
after treatment.
October is Breast Cancer
Awareness Month. It's a month for
wearing pink ribbons, giving to
breast cancer care and research
charities, supporting women we
know to be sufferers but first and
foremost, it is a month for thought
about what each of us can do to help
improve women's health.
Breast cancer research has made
considerable progress over the past
two decades and vital work is still
underway. Research has brought
improvements in quality of life and
survival.
But one woman in nine in this
country will be diagnosed during
her lifetime. Every 11 minutes
someone is told they have breast
cancer in the UK. Most of us are
touched by it at some point in our
lives... my mother had it and
recovered; my friend has it and is
being treated.
Breast cancer remains the most
common cancer in the UK with
nearly 46,000 people diagnosed every
year. Much of how we respond to
those shocking realities is up to us.
And the first move is to stop
pretending it will always happen
somebody else.
By taking time to consider all of
breast cancer's implications this
October its effects on families, the
traumas it brings to sufferers, the
worry it engenders in friends and
carers, the needs there are for
development of still better
treatments and detection methods
the more we can take charge of it,
rather than falling victim to cancer's
frightening control.
This month we can remind
thousands of women to be
breast aware, to self-
examine for any change
that might signal the need
for further examination
which could ultimately lead
to earlier detection and
better results from treatment.
It's simple. It's a month for
being brave, for being realistic
about our options, for
facing our demons, for
being supportive of
other women... for being
essentially and
courageously female.
For wearing a pink ribbon with
faith.
