"In 2006, the custom wheel busi-
ness was hot," Conkling said. "Well,
then 2008 comes and things start ta-
pering off, and now the 2009 thing,
with everybody losing their 401(k),
puckered it right up, as far as the auto
accessory part of it. So we thought
well, time to redirect."
In addition to their custom work,
the pair now provides under-vehi-
cle maintenance on brakes, shocks,
drive trains and the like; sells demo-
lition derby accessories, and offers
new, used and consignment tires.
They also are EPA certified to collect
old tires, in bulk and off-site.
"We are still servicing custom
wheels, but we've noticed our tire
numbers going up," Conkling said.
The two are big on customer sat-
isfaction. When it comes to selling
tires, they quiz you on how you use
your vehicle, find out your budget,
then suggest a variety of tires to suit
your needs. Thanks to that, people
come from as far away as Clinton,
Iowa, just to have their tires changed
at the Wheel House.
They also custom install any ac-
cessories, regardless of where they
were purchased.
"Ninety-nine percent of our clien-
tele is referral-based. And we have
no flat rates for what we do � we
have discounts for repeat business
to show our customers we appreci-
ate their business," Conkling said.
