Hal Branson, producer/
director of No Ifs,
Ands or Butts
"My idea came from my
many attempts to try and
quit smoking. Despite the
fact that I recycle and
compost I realised I'd been
throwing cigarette butts on
the ground for 10-15 years.
As a form of penance, I
resolved to quit smoking and
pick up a butt for every
cigarette I smoked.
"The results are quite
hilarious.
"I was nave to the
machinations of film
production and delivery. This
has been an invaluable
experience, having the
dedicated time and advice of
industry professionals."
Daymon Britton, director of Seize the Day
"We ran an online survey of the top ten things a 30 something man
should do before he dies. The responses were great, ranging from the
interesting to the insane to the down right dirty. The top 10 were clean
enough so we decided I would do each of the top 10 and record my
experiences.
"Seize the Day is an inspiring 10-minute documentary about the
modern 30-something guy. It's about more than a receding hairline and
working out in the gym to get rid of those love handles. It asks what
does the everyday 30-year-old man want out of life?"
Anton Hecht, producer/
director of Bewick Court
"The film is a musical built
around a poem written with the
participants on their lives and
experiences. These people are
all very different and come from
many different countries.
"I wanted the film to be
everyday, almost matter of fact,
in what it was saying but feel
good and poignant in the way
it was done. It was about
putting a face on a faceless
tower block in the heart of
Newcastle. The lack of
musicality in people involved in
a musical is something quite
unique, though after watching
The XFactor I'm not so sure
anymore."

positive vibes from print and

well be a breakthrough few
months for the band: Ali

Tate and Chris Cairns, who
have been together as Viva
City for three years (and
featured on our very own
Adrenalin pages in May).
Briggflatts by Basil Bunting
Includes a CD of Bunting reading the poem and
a DVD of Peter Bells film about the poet.
Bloodaxe Books, 12.
Everything you need to know about Northumberland's Basil
Bunting (1900-85) is attractively packaged in this slim volume
the words, the voice, the pictures (still and moving).
Even if you know nothing about
a man hailed by many as one of
the most important British poets,
it's all here.
"Brag, sweet tenor bull..."
begins the poem, read for the
first time by Bunting at
Newcastle's Morden Tower in
1965.
The poem has stood the test
of time. Now part of the fabric of
Northumbrian life and culture, it
is a worthwhile addition to any
bookshelf.
