Choosing a pre-school
Play based steps
towards learning
FROM September 2008 all children
from birth to five have been fol-
lowing the Early Years Foundation
Stage (EYFS) a new play based
approach to learning.
It means that whatever type of
setting you choose to send your
child, they will receive the same
high quality care and no distinction
will be made between childcare
and education.
The new system includes more or
different use of the outdoors, more
time spent on playing on activities
children have chosen themselves
and more planning for each child as
an individual.
The EYFS emphasises the role of
the key worker and the importance
of having a real partnership with
parents.
As a result measures such as a
better sharing of information about
the child's development and
opportunities for parents to join in
with activities in the setting have
been introduced.
The EYFS will be used in day
nurseries, childminders, pre-schools,
nursery classes, nursery schools and
reception classes and will also apply
to out of school clubs with young
children.
The EYFS is arranged into four
themes: a unique child, positive
relationships, enabling
environments; learning and
development.
