Lynn will celebrate its
historic links with the
Hanseatic League with
a Maritime extrava-
ganza during the
weekend of July 30-
August 2.
The star attraction of the
festivities will be arrival of the
15th century replica sailing
ship the Lisa Von Lubeck,
coming from her home port in
Germany.
She will sail up river to moor
at the Boal Quay for the festi-
val weekend, allowing the pub-
lic to go aboard this majestic
vessel.
Lynn has a long and illustri-
ous maritime tradition, it was
among England's most signifi-
cant ports during the 14th and
15th centuries, and largely
because of its important links
with a group of German ports
which formed the Hanseatic
League and controlled trade in
the Baltic and North Sea.
King's Lynn has the only sur-
viving Hanse House in
England, situated near the his-
toric Saturday Market Place.
There were others in Hull,
Yarmouth, Ipswich and
London.
Three years ago, Lynn
became the only English mem-
ber of the newly-formed mod-
ern Hanseatic League, whose
members include Hamburg
and Lubeck.
The `new' HANSE hopes to
foster and develop business
links and promote cultural
exchange and tourism within
member towns and cities.
During the festival weekend,
visitors can enjoy the sound of
sea shanties and songs of the
sea along the quayside as they
sample the delights of street
theatre, an al fresco food fair,
puppet shows, storytelling, tra-
ditional maritime craft demon-
strations, heritage walks,
music from local bands and
much much more.
Over the weekend the inter-
national Blacksmiths Guild of
Artists will be creating a unique
public art piece to commemo-
rate the Hanse Festival.
Blacksmiths will be coming
from all over Europe and work-
ing together on the Quayside.
There will be a concert of
Hanseatic music in St
Margaret's Church. Five great
baroque composers feature in
the concert to celebrate the
