A COLLEGE pet has made a full recov-
ery from a life-threatening illness
thanks to an innovative implant and lots
of attention.
Hobbs the ferret has had a tough few
years of battling an illness that left vets
and the animal management team at
Rochester's MidKent College baffled.
The much-loved pet was first taken ill
in May 2008, but suddenly deteriorated
just before Christmas.
The college team took Hobbs to see
expert Mark Rowlands at Trinity Vet
Centre, Heritage Lane, Maidstone, who
removed his diseased adrenal gland and
diagnosed Cushings Disease.
Mr Rowlands then fitted Hobbs with a
new implant which houses state-of-the-
art technology to help him fully recover.
The college's animal collection techni-
cian, Eliz Thomas, based at the Medway
Campus, said: "Hobbs was so weak we
had to take it in turns to spoon-feed him.
"However, he finally started to get bet-
ter and he's now back to his old self."

A SPECALIST university has been
awarded 12,000 to help unem-
ployed graduates find work during
the economic downturn.
The University for the Creative Arts (UCA)
was given the grant from the Higher
Education Funding Council (HEFCE) to cre-
ate 75 internships for recent graduates at
small businesses.
The grant is particularly aimed at securing
placements in digital and low carbon indus-
tries.
Uwe Derksen, UCA's assistant director of
research and enterprise for all of its five cam-
puses, including Maidstone and Rochester,
submitted the funding application to benefit
its various graduate projects as part of the
Government's Backing Young Britain scheme.
The university department director said:
"This funding award recognises UCA's com-
mitment to its students and graduates and the
region's creative economy.
"The programme will build on previous and
current excellent work with graduates and
business, including Business First, Creative
Advantage and Tonic."
Denise Harmer, head of UCA Business First
in Kent, said:"The new programme enables us
to expand the current Business First project
by placing graduates outside Kent, particular-
ly in London, where the digital industries are
mainly located and where graduates often see
their future career path."
The nationwide Backing Young Britain ini-
tiative hopes to provide 13.6million to sup-
port 8,500 graduate internships.
It is hoped the project will also support busi-
nesses through the effects of the crippling
recession with new members of staff.
Phillip Ely, head of UCA's Creative
Advantage scheme, said: "This internship pro-
gramme will allow us to not only support busi-
nesses in the south, but also help creative stu-
dios invest in other areas.
"Graduates bring with them a wealth of new
skills, ideas and approaches that can create a
competitive edge."
Other UCA sites are in based in Canterbury,
Epsom and Farnham.
Each campus specialises in a creative area.
The Oakwood Park site, in Maidstone, focuses
on animation and graphic design and
Rochester offers courses in fashion and pho-
tography.
