Mick Green, the gutsy and highly influential lead guitarist for the
English rock band the Pirates, died Jan. 11. He was 65. St the time
that Playmusic went to press no cause of death had been released,
although Green had suffered from health problems, including a
heart attack whilst performing onstage during a 1993 concert
performance in New Zealand by Bryan Ferry.
Green entered the public eye during the early 1960s when he
joined UK rock and roll band The Pirates. The group backed singer
Johnny Kidd, who had scored a major hit `Shakin' All Over' in 1960,
featuring Joe Moretti on lead guitar, and Green forged a solid bond
with the rhythm section comprising bassist Johnny Spence and
drummer Frank Farley that saw the trio continue to work together
following Kidd's death in a car crash in 1966. The hard rocking
trio flourished as a powerful live act during the 1970s and Green's
dense, assertive style influenced younger artists like Wilko Johnson
of Dr. Feelgood (who took their name from an American R&B tune
covered by the Pirates). The Pirates continued to play together
until Farley's retirement in 2005. Green continued to play sessions,
appearing on albums and in concert with Paul McCartney, Bryan
Ferry and Van Morrison.

Unsigned bands and artists are invited to submit their videos via a new
website (www.MusicVideoShowcase.TV) that is unique to the UK. The
website offers bands a chance to upload their music videos for free,
alongside interviews with music industry experts that offer their
wisdom on different aspects of becoming wider-known, signed or even
setting up their own label. These inspiring videos include advice from
promoters such as Vince Power on getting gigs, Jon Astley (The Who,
Tori Amos, George Harrison) on mastering, and from well-known bands
and artists like Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music, David Gilmour),
Supergrass and The Guillemots.
