email: mercury@hertsessexnews.co.ukA piece of history as 1,000 visitors flock to popular open day A RECORD number ofvisi-
tors flocked to Hertford
Castle8217s open day for an after-
noon ofmusic, medieval
activities and children8217s
entertainment.Around 1,000 people went to
the Castle Street venue on
Sunday when it gave members
ofthe public the chance to
explore the area8217s local history.
Susanne Mead, Hertford
Town Council8217s marketing and
promotions manager, said: 8220It
was brilliant. We had double
the number ofpeople we8217ve
ever had. It was quite extraor-
dinary to see so many.8221
Visitors chatted with a
Norman knight and
his lady, as well as a peasant
archer and his wife, and were
able to dress up in armour and
carry a sword.
There were also medieval
games, such as throwing hoops
over stags8217 antlers, for people to
enjoy.
Activities for youngsters
included face painting, a boun-
cy castle, colouring competi-
tions and quizzes.
Music was provided by the
Hemel Hempstead Brass Band,
while the Standon Morris Men
performed traditional dances
for the crowd.
Hertford mayor Cllr Russell
Radford (Con, Bengeo) attended
the event, which was one ofhis
last mayoral duties before he
hands over the chains ofoffice
to his successor.
He said: 8220It was absolutely
marvellous. What really
pleased me was that we had
people from France, America
and Germany.
8220We had lots ofpeople com-
ing into the castle, not just sit-
ting in the grounds. It was love-
ly to see people enjoying it.8221

experience I gained with
bringing up my first child to
another child that needed it.
That8217s what drove me to
fostering.It seemed a waste
not to give that to another
child.
