Lax landlady put
family in dangerA YOUNG couple and
their baby were put at
risk when their land-
lady failed to fix "dan-
gerous" gas appliances,
a court has heard.
Sajida Kausar Ali was fined
10,000 and ordered to pay a
further 4,000 costs when she
appeared before magistrates
at Huntingdon.
Ali, from St Ives, admitted
breaching Health and Safety
Act regulations at the prop-
erty she rented out in Sallow-
bush Road in Huntingdon.
Now the Health and Safety
Executive (HSE) has warned
landlords to abide by the law
or risk a prison sentence.
Magistrates were told that
during annual gas checks on
the house a legal require-
ment for all landlords 10
defects were found, three of
which were classed as "imm-
ediately dangerous" and
three classed as "at risk",
including two gas leaks and a
very poorly maintained gas
fire in a room used as sleep-
ing accommodation for a long
period by a young married
couple and their new baby.
Ali was said to have failed
to comply with an improve-
ment notice requiring gas
safety checks to be carried
out in August last year and
she was also accused of fail-
ing to maintain appliances
and to remove them from
rooms used for sleeping.
Stephen Manley, a HSE ins-
pector, said: "There are many
myths about health and
safety carbon monoxide is
not one of them.
"People needlessly die each
year due to a lack of effective
maintenance of gas appl-
iances.
"Landlords must ensure
appliances are maintained
and annually tested to ensure
they are in a safe condition."
Mr Manley said: "Mrs Ali
failed, despite requests by
Huntingdonshire District
Council housing officers and
then the HSE to arrange for
the inspection of all the app-
liances in the home. There is
a strict legal duty on land-
lords and the specific failure
to comply with the improve-
ment notice was a major agg-
ravating factor in this case.
"I urge all landlords to
ensure they identify and
implement their duties under
both the Housing Act and the
Gas Safety (Installation and
Use) regulations, both to
reduce risk to tenants and to
avoid court action such as
this."

Prince's Trust honour for youth worker
A ST Neots man has been recognised for his
positive impact on the community.
Andy Truett, 46, from Eynesbury, beat 3,500
entrants to be named runner up for the Essex
and Suffolk Water Leadership award at the
Prince's Trust event in Ipswich last month.
Mr Truett works as an adviser on The
Prince's Trust xl programme at Fenland
Junction pupil referral unit, which is for
students out of mainstream education.
According to his colleagues Mr Truett is
"full of enthusiasm and passion for helping
young people" and is always finding
imaginative ways to engage pupils who find
classroom learning difficult.
Mr Truett said: "I get so much out of
working with young people and I just want to
see them do well."
