T
he ravages of a bitterly
cold winter play havoc
with everything we used to
know as good intentions.
Ill-effects from all that
excess comfort food, sweet
cravings, overheated rooms and
biting winds, send health regimes
right through the window.
No wonder under-eye circles and
pasty faces are permanent features.
According to beauty expert Bobbi
Brown, the best way to attack the
winter doldrums is to fake full
blooming health and radiance until
spring sunshine lights up our lives.
A good concealer is an essential
tool in every woman's makeup kit.
"Post-Christmas, our skin often
looks tired and dull," says Bobbi.
"Make it look fresh by keeping your
foundation light. Instead of a
conventional foundation, opt for a
light base like a tinted moisturiser.
"And rather than wearing a heavy
lipstick, try a tinted balm. These
moisturising formulas give a fresh
and natural glow to the face.
"Blusher is an instant pick-me-up.
It adds health and radiance to the
skin. I like dusting a shimmery
highlighter over blusher. It looks
glamorous without looking overdone.
"An added benefit is that it helps
contour your face, which is especially
helpful when you're feeling
bloated."
When choosing colours for eyes,
cheeks and lips, try beautiful pinky
shades-they look fresh. Avoid dark
colours at the moment, since they do
nothing to flatter lacklustre skin or
facial bloat. Look for light-reflecting
textures like metallic eyes and glossy
lips to instantly lift the face.

P
lanning a romantic Valentine's dinner for two
in a favourite restaurant? Be careful all may
not be as it should be. According to The Good
Food Guide, some dining experiences can fall
fairly short of the perfection mark.
Restaurateurs may do well to cast an eye over
readers' top 10 bugbears.
The restaurant guide has compiled the following list of
things that really get up customers' noses and ruin a good
meal out:
Double tipping. Being asked to add a tip when a service
charge has already been added is a restaurant cardinal sin.
Over-attentive waiters. Having your wine glass topped up
every two minutes or being interrupted to be asked if
everything's all right can ruin conversations.
Stealth charges. Restaurants should make it absolutely clear
if there is a cover charge or if there is a charge for bread, petits
fours or indeed anything else.
Small portions. Is there anything worse than leaving a
restaurant and still being hungry?
Turning tables. Being asked to vacate your table before you're
ready to leave is a sure-fire way to annoy.
Charging for tap water. Is it too much to offer the choice of
bottled or free tap water?
Bad table placement. Bunched-together tables can leave you
feeling you have had the wrong sort of intimate evening.
Out-of-season ingredients. Asparagus and strawberries are
not native to the UK in winter, so should not pop up on
menus.
Lost in translation. If your menu is in English, stick to
English descriptions. Not everyone knows what sauce aigre-
doux is (a sweet and sour sauce).
Well-seasoned. Open salt and pepper bowls may be modish
but who knows whose fingers have been there?
Elizabeth Carter, Editor of The Good Food Guide, says:
"Dining out is usually an enjoyable experience, but sometimes
a visit to a restaurant is memorable for the wrong reason, like
an annoying waiter or a problem with the bill.
"Restaurateurs looking to raise their game this year could
do a lot worse than listen to their customers' pet hates.
"They are
often simple mistakes that can be rectified."
