Village LifeTUESDAY
Lynn News, April 17, 20079
Website: www.lynnnews.co.ukWHILE Castle Acre and nearby West Acre
are a bit offthe beaten track, they are
both lively places which each year attract
many visitors.
For such a relatively small village,
Castle Acre has much more than its fair
share ofattractions, some might say.
It was the first conservation village in
Norfolk in 1971, and it8217s not difficult to see
why.
Bracketed between the famous ruins of
a medieval castle and the sprawling
remains ofa magnificent priory is a
village scene that appears to be straight
out ofa picture postcard.
The shops around the tree-lined green
cater well for both the local people and
the huge influx ofvisitors in the main
holiday season.
But there is more to the village thanHANDILY-PLACED
between Lynn and
Swaffham,
Narborough has
really benefitted from
the peace and
tranquillity that came
with its bypass.
The former
Maltings premises in
the village have, in
recent years,
become home to a
variety of specialist
businesses.
Narborough Water
Mill still contains its
machinery and is
now listed. It has
been the source of
considerable
archaeological
interest over the
years and several
detailed studies
have been carried
out.MIDDLETON and the adjoining hamlets
ofBlackborough End, Fair Green and
Tower End are popular places for many
people to live, despite the proximity ofthe
A47 road.
While the road provides rapid access to
the towns ofLynn and Swaffham, the fact
that it goes through the middle of
Middleton means an ever-increasing flow
oftraffic for villagers to endure.
Folk in Middleton have been calling for
a bypass for more years than many of
them would care to remember 8212 and who
can blame them, when you see the
benefits a bypass has brought to
Narborough, just down the road?
For residents with close relatives on
opposite sides ofthe A47, and there are
plenty ofthem, crossing backwards and
forwards during the day can be tediousBlackborough End is a busy community
too, with one or two specialists businesses
that are worth a visit.just tourism. Thriving local
organisations, an active church, and pubs
provide a service for the full-time
residents, as well as the many visitors.
The Peddars Way national trail passes
through Castle Acre, and it is possible to
plan a series oflovely walks from the
village, taking in parts ofthe long
distance footpath, as well as the lanes and
by-roads near the River Nar.So much history in one villageand time-consuming, and without the
barrier ofthe main road, the community
would be even more close-knit.
Despite the road problems, Middleton
has many plusses that are appreciated by
the locals.
As well as being handy for work and
shops, there are also plenty ofactivities
and facilities close to home, the village
hall, school and church all being
extremely active.
