World Book DaySCHOOLCHILDREN

World Book Day
last Thursday with
a range offun
activities 8211 from fancy
dress to fund-raising 8211 to
promote child literacy.
Pupils at Farnham
Primary
brought their
favourite books to life by
holding a fancy dress
competition, with entrants
including Flat Stanley, Alice in
Wonderland and three Harry
Potters. The winner was Kayne
Clifford, 10, as Bart Simpson,
complete with yellow skin.
High House Day Nursery
in
Takeley organised a readathon for
its young bookworms, raising
163250 to buy a CD player and audio
books for the children8217s ward at
Harlow8217s Princess Alexandra
Hospital.
A library-like hush descended
on
Takeley Primary
as pupils delved
into the pages oftheir best-loved
novels and enjoyed activities based on
their favourite fiction. The children
and their teachers also dressed as
well-known characters like pirates.
Pupils at Spellbrook Primary
swapped their uniforms for fancy
dress by donning the garb of
characters straight from the pages
ofpopular fiction.
The youngsters enjoyed literary-
themed activities and story-telling,
with the winners ofthe fancy dress
competition receiving their prizes
during the morning assembly.
A book fair was held at Thorn
Grove Primary
in Bishop8217s Stortford
to give pupils the chance to restock
their book shelves.
Both the children and staffdressed as
literary characters, with prizes
awarded by the school councillors for
