Ware claims WoodsDEPARTING Ware keeper
Luke Woods has hit back at
claims that he walked away
from the club saying he was
forced out.
Manager Glen Alzapiedi told
the
Mercury
last week that the
Maltese under-21 international
goalkeeper had turned down a
new contract at Ware and it
looked likely he would leave.
However, the 19-year-old, who
is set to play for Malta against
Georgia under-21s in August,
says he had wanted to play for
Ware next season.
8220Glen and I hadn8217t been on the
best of terms after some
disagreements about football
and then recent disciplinary
measures 8211then he asked me
to leave,8221 said Woods.
8220I had been offered a new
contract by the club, but I
wasn8217t happy with the terms. I
really wanted to stay at Ware,
but I wanted to stay on a non-
contract basis.
8220I was told to leave before it
was known I was rejecting the
contract. It8217s disappointing
because I wanted to stay at
Ware, but I wasn8217t given the
opportunity.8221
Woods accepted that being
dropped and disciplined from
the Roy Bailey Cup final
against Cheshunt in the final
game of the season was
deserved, but felt it was an
unfortunate situation.
He claimed that it had been
decided that each of the club8217s
keepers would get a start in
Ware8217s three cup finals at the
season8217s end.
Having already played in the
Herts Senior Cup final defeat
to Cheshunt, Woods knew he
would not be starting, so went
out the preceding night for a
friend8217s birthday.
On the morning of the cup
final Woods said he was
informed he would be playing.
The situation swung again
when Woods admitted he had
been out the night before and
was subsequently dropped,
leaving coach Matt Allen to
play in goal as Ware won 4-1.
Woods, who is set to join
Ryman Premier side
Wealdstone, pointed out he
was still leaving Ware on good
terms.
8220I have a lot of respect for
Glen as a person and all my
friends are still at the club,8221

good to know that there is

men have picked up a presti-
gious prize at the East Hockey
League annual awards for
their good conduct.
First XI captain Rob
Mitchell was presented with
the East Men8217s Hockey League
fair play award 8211 The Hugh
Jarvis Trophy 8211 during the
ceremony on Sunday.
Mitchell told the
Mercury
that it was quite a distinction
for the club, as in the 22 years
the trophy has been awarded,
Hertford are the first club
from Hertfordshire to have
won it.
Around 100 clubs through-
out the East region compete
for the fair play award.
A combination ofeach
team8217s discipline record
throughout the season in rela-
tion to yellow and red cards,
the divisional standard each
team from the club plays in
and the number ofteams
fielded by the club all count
towards the award.
Hertford8217s four men8217s teams
managed to avoid any red
cards in the 2007/2008 season
and only picked up four yellow
cards.
8220It was an honour and a
privilege to pick up the award
on behalfofthe club,8221 said
Mitchell.
8220Our men8217s teams had
another encouraging season,
(they just missed out on the
division four South-West title
to Cheshunt) and it seems we
managed to keep our heads
better than most on match-
days. It8217s a great reflection of
the high standards we set our-
selves.
8220We do take a lot ofpride in
playing our hockey with a
high level ofpassion and com-
mitment, but also in a way
that promotes fair play and
integrity.
8220It8217s a great credit to every-
one at the club that we led the
way in terms ofdiscipline.8221 By ALASDAIRGOLDgolda@hertsessexnews.co.ukAre you paying too much for
