celebrated
his
fifth
birthday
and
is
happily
attending
mainstr

school

Burton
End
Primary
School
in
Haverhill,
despite
facing
many
mor
ed

ficulties
in
life
than
his
classmates.

youngster
was
bor

spina
bifida
and

and
had
to
have

inserted
into
his
brain
to
drain

shunt

his
brain,
which
could
cause
brain
damage.
The
trust
also
paid
for

abin
bed
with
drawers
under
neath

ea
ll
the
equipment
he
needs
can
be
stor
ed,
leaving
ro
om
for
toys
in
his
ro
om.
Andr
ew
has
shown
re
markable
re
silience
and
could
not
wait
to
get
back
home
after
major
sur
gery
last
year
,w
hich
has
made
his
life
even
mor
ed
if
ficult
in
the
short
term.
The
spina
bifida
which
Andr
ew
suf
fers
fr
om
means
ac
atheter
has
to
be
used
to
re
move
urine
fr
om
his
body
.I
n
ac
omplex
11-hour
operation
last
year
,A
ndr
ew
was
given
a
bladder
augmentation
by
re
moving
part
of
his
bowel
to
make
his
bladder
bigger
.
Further
tests
ar
eb
eing
carried
out
and
Andr
ew
could
face
further
sur
gery
in
futur
et
o
re
place
the
valves
and
pump
system
which
have
been
inserted
into
his
body
.H

hospital
with
thr

insertions
wher
et
ubes
must
be
fitted
into
his
body
and
thr
ee
litr
es
of
saline
solution
must
re
gularly
be
flushed
thr
ough
his
system.
Although
his
condition
means
the
family
cannot
be
away
fr
om
the
house
for
long
periods
and
a
huge
amount
of
equipment
is
needed,
Andr
ew
takes
it
all
in
his
stride.
Roz
said:

always
on
the

His
latest
sur
gery
was
two
operations
in
one
and
he
was
supposed
to
be
in
intensive
car
ef
or
aw
eek,
but
after
thr
ee
days
the
nurses
had
to
hold
him
down
to
sedate
him
because
he
wanted
to
leave.

likely

do
any
sur
gery
until
he
was
12
years
old
and
I
hated
the
thought
of
him
being
in
nappies
until
he
was
12.
At
least
he
should
be
able
to
get
out
of
them
sooner

it
has
made
life
mor
ed
if
ficult
because
he
cannot
socialise
because
you
cannot
take
everything
with
you
and
we
cannot
leave
the
house
for
mor
e
than
thr
ee
hours.

trained
to
catheterise
him.
He
could
not
wait
to
get
back
to
school
and
was
soon
going
ro
und
showing
everyone
his
