Natural alternative to
formal burial ground
SOME people may believe a
graveyard to be a very
uninspiring place to
remember a loved one who
meant so much.
However, there is an
alternative resting place, a place
which offers an environmentally-
friendly, cost-effective
alternative to traditional burials,
cemeteries and graveyards
Oakfield Wood.
At Oakfield Wood, in Wrabness
near Manningtree, Woodland
Burials offers beauty throughout
the seasons as well as homes for
wildlife among the trees and old-
fashioned wild flowers.
Unlike municipal and other
cemeteries, where often a short-
term lease only is acquired and
graves can be subject to re-use,
Woodland Burials' grounds offer a
permanent grave which will remain
undisturbed.
The burial ground at Wrabness
will be owned and ultimately be
managed by Essex Wildlife Trust.
The Woodlands of
Remembrance provide a positive
way in which to put life back into
the environment following death.
Unlike traditional cemeteries,
there are no headstones. Instead, a
native broadleaf tree is planted for
each full or ashes interment, and a
hardwood plaque marks the grave
and can be replaced when it
biodegrades.
Each Woodland of
Remembrance is managed in
accordance with a management
scheme, approved by wildlife
trusts and the local authority, to
ensure its development for the
benefit of all wildlife and nature.
The management schemes
ensure each Woodland of
Remembrance will grow into a
nature reserve and sanctuary for
wildlife.
There is no obligation to follow
any particular form of funeral or
interment service, the choice is left
entirely to the family and can be
formal or informal.
As the woodlands develop they
will become an increasingly
attractive place for family and
friends to visit.
They never close and can be
visited whenever family and friends
choose.
