penalty for
red light
calamityTEWIN8217S Lewis Hamilton shunted
himselfout ofcontention at
Sunday8217s Canadian Grand Prix
after running into the back of
Ferrari8217s Kimi Raikonen on the
exit ofthe pit lane, failing to see a
red light. Not only did Hamilton fail to score
and lose top spot in the drivers8217
championship, he now also faces a
penalty of10 places on the grid for
the French Grand Prix in two weeks
time as a result ofhis error.
The 23-year-old McLaren driver had
got offto a brilliant start in
Montreal after qualifying in pole
position, and established a 7.1 second
lead over the rest ofthe field.
However it all went horribly wrong
for the Herts ace on lap 17 when the
safety car was deployed to allow
Adrian Sutil8217s stranded Force India
car to be removed from the track.
After two laps behind the safety car
the pit lane was opened allowing
drivers to come in for fuel and tyre
changes.
The problems started as the cars
began to come back out as the pit-
lane exit was still closed.
Raikkonen and eventual winner
Robert Kubica (BMW) stopped side
by side at the red light, but Hamilton
failed to notice this in time, and he
smashed into the back ofthe Ferrari.
Hamilton was unable to continue as
he broke his front suspension while
Raikkonen8217s Ferrari was also dam-
aged. His race had also ended.
Speaking shortly after the incident
Hamilton said: "I don't know really
what happened. I was comfortably in
the lead. It was looking like it was
going to be an easy win. We came in.
It wasn't a great stop.
8220I saw the guys in front ofme, and
all ofsudden they'd stopped. I saw
the red light but, by the time I saw it,
it was too late to stop.8221
The Hertfordshire driver added that
a warning from his McLaren team
that the red light was on at the end
ofthe pit lane had 8220come a little bit
late8221.
Hamilton drops to joint second in the
drivers8217 championship on 38pts with
Ferrari8217s Felipe Massa, while Kubica
took full advantage to head the
leaderboard on 42 points. Hertford8217s huge haul of medalsMEDALJOY:Hertford Swimming Club8217s medals winners from the Stevenage Open meet
