another memorable season
in the KB Tyres/Mercury
League when they picked up
the premier division trophy
at the annual presentation
night.Trinity claimed the title by
just one point from Goffs Oak
in a dramatic climax to the
season. Trinity were level on
points with an inferior goal
difference to their rivals but
had a game in hand. A goalless
draw with Hertford Heath
sealed the title.
The 2007/8 was another suc-
cessful season for the league
and more than 120 representa-
tives from all the teams gath-
ered for the ceremony at
Allenburys Sports and Social
Club in Ware, as well as league
president Ron Partridge and
Herts FA chiefexecutive
Eddie King.
Chairman Malcolm Phillips
thanked the teams for their
contributions to another excit-
ing season and to the officials
for helping administer the
league, before KB Tyres man-
aging director Keith Bird pre-
sented the trophies.
The main disappointment
last season came from the
withdrawal ofJohn Warner,
Bury Rangers, Ware Lions,
Little Munden, Inter Reserves
and Parklands and next season
Phillips said the league were
considering going down to
three divisions.
He told the Mercury: 8220It was
a good night and KB Tyres
have agreed to sponsor the
league for another three years
which is great because that
will include our centenary in
2010/11.
8220It8217s possible we may go
down to three leagues but
we're waiting to see ifmore
teams want to join.8221

Green Belt Motor Club put up storming
performances to win trophies at the recent
two-day Gerald Alfred Finch Memorial
Autocross.
This pair of British Autocross Championship
events, which attracted competitors from as
far afield as Devon and Scotland, were jointly
organised by GBMC and Wickford Auto Club.
The two events both involved over 50
competitors completing a series of accurately
timed high speed runs around three laps of a
three-quarters-of-a mile long circuit set up in
a field at Straights Mill near Braintree.
On both days the overall winner was Scottish
driver Jimmy Wood, in his home built
autocross buggy.
Green Belters Simon Higgs, who lives in
Bengeo, and Ian Barnard, who works in
Waltham Cross, both drove the latter8217s IPB
Motor Services sponsored 2000cc Vauxhall
Astra.
Although this car had problems with its
gearbox mountings on both days, Higgs
managed a first day finish in second place in
the class for over 1600cc Economy Standard
Production Cars. He was just 0.6 second
slower than the class winner. The next day
Barnard achieved the same position 8211 by the
exactly the same narrow margin.
On both days the special awards for the best
performances by Green Belt members, who
had not qualified for any of the overall or
class trophies, went to Hertford residents.
Paul Whitlock, driving his Ocean Voice and
Data-sponsored 1600cc Peugeot 205, clocked
a best time of 3:20.2 to finish in 29th place
overall on day one, while Green Belt
competition8217s secretary Richard Warne was
23.4 seconds faster the next day.
Warne8217s 1600cc Ford Escort, sponsored by
Car Spares of Cheshunt, suffered from
overheating and tyre problems on both days.
Nevertheless it took him to second and fourth
place finishes in the class for 1400cc to
1650cc cars 8211 and 17th and equal 18th places
overall 8211 on the first and second days
respectively. BEST BELTER: Paul Whitlock8217s Peugeot 205 speeds round the course Photo:Photomotion.org.uk (s)
