Wadhams 3-2-4-0.Cricket scoreboardCricket tablesCONTROVERSY overshadowed
Hertford8217s third defeat in a row as the
club made an official appeal after the
seven wicket loss to West Herts. The visitors had batted first, reaching
164-9 off60 overs on a slow pitch, with
four batsmen removed by short pitched
balls which didn8217t bounce as much as
they expected.
As Hertford began to bowl they
realised the ball being used was one for
the Saracens League, namely a Readers
ball. They immediately rejected this
softer, ineligible ball and acorrect Dukes
ball for Home Counties Premier League
use, was retrieved from the pavilion.
With the better bounce, West Herts
knocked the required runs with relative
ease. After the game, it was confirmed
that the Hertford innings had been
played with the incorrect ball.
Captain Rob Darby told the
Mercury
that it was West Herts8217 responsibility to
provide the right ball, and for the
umpires to check the balls provided
were the correct standard before each
innings.
8220We felt harshly done by as West Herts
chased down our total with the correct
HCPL ball, whereas our innings was
completed with a softer, sub-standard
lower league one,8221 he said.
Home Counties League secretary
Roger Garrini said that both West Herts
and the umpires would be given 10 days
to reply to the appeal before a decision
was made on the game.
However, he did reveal that the game
was unlikely to be replayed with the
already packed fixture schedule.
Darby and overseas player Sandun
Dias spearheaded Hertford8217s batting
efforts with 31 and 37 respectively, while
Richard Cordingley added 33 not out as
the overs came to a close.
However, New Zealander Neal Parlane
and Sean Farrell set about the opening
attack ofDias and Nizar Mohammed
with 51 off10 overs and the score was
117 without loss when tea was taken.
Scott Ruskin had Farrell caught by
Dias for 31 and had Parlane lbw for 73. A
third bowling point was gained
whenChris Box had Duncan Hodges
caught behind for eight but that was
small consolation as West Herts reached
168-3.
The defeat saw Hertford drop to sev-
enth place in the league.
On Sunday, Hertford played
Broxbourne in the Herts County Cup
first round and produced a clinical bowl-
ing and fielding performance to restrict
Broxbourne to 96 all out. They reached
97-4 as Ollie Ray (39), Dias (19)and Darby
(22) had little difficulty overhauling the
target.
The second XI swept aside a weak
Botany Bay side by 10 wickets in
Saracens Herts League division four.
Graeme Riddle (81 not out) and Rob
Carter (79 not out) blasted Hertford to
175-0.
Earlier the Hertford bowlers had
bowled Botany out for 171, Carter finish-
ing with figures of4-42.
Hertford III (187-2) beat Boxmoor (122)
by 65 runs in division six with Richard
Eaton (58) and Peter Amos (4-17)
impressing for the hosts. The fourth
team (114-3) overcame Southgate
Compton II (113-7) in division XI by
seven wickets (Alistair Hillary (48 not
out; Chris Thompson (3-11)).West Herts (168-3) beat Hertford
(164-9) by seven wickets(Home Counties Premier League, div IIEast)H
